Research for an upcoming Digest assignment led me this week to YouTube and a score of clips from SANTA BARBARA (I know, I know, my job is enviable). One of the clips I watched was actually from the very first episode of SB I ever watched, the first wedding of Mason and Julia, played by the incomparable Lane Davies and Nancy Lee Grahn. Does anyone else remember this ceremony, in which Mason accidentally pocketed a grocery list instead of his vows and had to improvise after blurting out the first few items on the list at the altar? That was enough to get me completely hooked on the show back in 1989 (my taste was none too shabby for a 12-year-old, eh?)

Did you see on our site that GH's Kent King (Lainey) was dropped to recurring status? What a mistake! King is a talented actress. (remember when she let Danny, the bastard who ran down her mother, drown in the swimming pool during her KNOTS LANDING days?)

While between DAYS OF OUR LIVES' Lucas coming home and catching EJ and Sami in the sack and Jesse and Angie's wedding on ALL MY CHILDREN, it has been a pretty entertaining soap week, I think it's safe to say that the biggest drama was on prime time: that's right, AMERICAN IDOL! Much like the other 90+ million voters in the country, my eyes were fixed to FOX and the double whammy of the AI finale and results shows. Move over Y&R's David Chow and OLTL's David Vickers, it was all about David Cook and David Archuleta. I rocked out to ZZ Top and George Michael and was part of the collective breath held when Ryan Seacrest opened that shiny gold envelope. So, if you think I love GENERAL HOSPITAL's Sebastian Roché, mutiply that by a hundred and you'll get the level of my admiration for David Cook right now.

So, David Cook pulled out a victory on AMERICAN IDOL by a healthy 12 million-vote margin. Good for you, "Cookie." When I heard the results show was going to last two hours, I had only one question: How in the world are they going to fill one hour and 58 minutes? I had to ask…

Finola Hughes's (Anna, GH) last-minute decision to not play the role of Sabrina's mom Zara on Y&R has the soap frantically searching for a replacement. Here, I present five, very viable candidates.

Our long national nightmare is almost over; it's time for the finale of AMERICAN IDOL. Okay, so it's my nightmare. I have been looking forward to this denouement for the entire month I've been watching.

Now that Alistair has been shot on PASSIONS, I hope he's really and truly dead this time.

Did you hear? May is Better Hearing and Speech Month. I didn't know that either until Kassie DePaiva (Blair, OLTL) mentioned that she and hubby James (ex-Max) were embarking on a whirlwind tour of hearing-related events this month, including a photo exhibit last night to benefit the Clarke School-New York. As many fans know, their son, J.Q., has a cochlear implant, so he made the cutest speech about the services the Clarke School has provided him and other hearing-impaired children.

The season finale of GOSSIP GIRL began with Lily waking up in Rufus' bed on the day of her wedding to Bart. Chuck woke up (fully dressed) in Blair's bed, much to her horror. Serena discovered that Georgina had spent the night at Dan's place. She flipped out and confessed the whole "I thought I killed some guy and you'd hate me so it was better you thought I slept with two strange men" thing. Bart and Lily had a coded conversation about revisiting "things" they loved when they were young — and how they should be let things — old buildings or old boyfriends — go.

YOUNG AND RESTLESS has always been a cutting edge show — timely storylines, crisp dialogue, impeccable wardrobe, and, above all, lively, up-to-date sets.
