Kendall refused to let Zach leave. The boys entered, overjoyed to see their daddy. Zach said he had to leave but would be back soon. Kendall sent the boys to get lunch so that she and Zach could have a heart-to-heart. He explained that he wanted to sell the casino business and that some of his casino associates had proven to be untrustworthy. Kendall insisted that Zach stay and protect their family himself. Zach allowed his wife to convince him to stay put. The boys rejoined them and the Slaters agreed to face the future as a team, "every step of the way."
JR blared at his lawyer to get him access to his son. Asher sympathized with JR's predicament. Erica showed up looking for JR. Erica offered to help JR in his war with Caleb, at least where AJ is concerned.
At Krystal's, Caleb told Krystal that he dislikes Halloween. Annie entered and Krystal said that she would kick her out if Emma weren't with her. Annie tried to soothe Emma, who was worried about Ryan, and also broke the news that they'd be getting a new home soon. Caleb approached Asher and warned him not to show up at Wildwind again. Caleb then went to the Chandler manse to deliver papers regarding the custody case to JR. Erica pleaded with the men to be reasonable and to work together to preserve their respective legacies. JR warned Erica that she had no idea what Caleb was capable of. Annie returned home and empathized with JR, who spoke of how much it hurt to be separated from AJ. Annie told JR that it looked like the murder trial was shifting suspicion onto Ryan. JR told Annie that she and Emma could live in the cottage for as long as they wanted. She was grateful and assured him that Marissa would not find out.
Greenlee asked Ryan what it meant that he kissed her. He denied that there was any significance to the smooch. Greens told Ryan that she was sorry for what she'd put him through when she first came back to town. Madison interrupted their conversation. Greens updated Mad about Nick's testimony against Ryan. Greenlee exited to give Jack a piece of her mind. Ryan sighed to Madison that it was time for them to face facts: He may well have been responsible for David's demise. Greens accused Jack of betraying her and told him that he was fired. Jack pointed out to Greens that she obviously thought that Ryan might be the guilty party. Greens said she would not think that. Jack beseeched his daughter to be honest with him. Jack assured Greens of still being in love with Ryan. Ryan overheard Greens say that she loves him.
After talking to Ryan, Madison went to see Annie to discuss the Ryan situation. Annie told Madison that she couldn't let Ryan take the fall for Greenlee. "Stop being such a nice girl or you will lose him," cautioned Annie.
JR and Asher discussed their respective run-ins with Caleb. Asher told JR that his mom died on Halloween. Meanwhile, Erica probed Caleb about what JR had been making such veiled reference to. Caleb shut her down.
Tuesday
Kendall and Greenlee discussed Ryan's trial and his strategy of acting as though he killed David out of love for Greenlee. Meanwhile, Jack and Erica were discussing the same thing at the courthouse. Erica asked Jack if his daughter isn't just the least bit grateful that he's trying to spare her a murder conviction.
Madison dropped by Ryan's before the hearing and asked where she stands with him. Ryan apologized for not being available to her lately and promised he'd make it up to her. Their conversation was interrupted by a call letting him know that his presence is needed in court ASAP, seeing as he's the first witness. Greenlee arrived to court just as Madison and Ryan were preparing to go in and shared an awkward gaze with her ex.
Colby sensed that something's troubling Asher, who admitted that it's the anniversary of his mother's death. Colby suddenly realized that Asher's birthday is on Halloween and wanted to throw him a mini celebration. At ConFusion, Damon overheard Nick bragging that his testimony changed the whole Hayward murder trial.
Bianca dropped by Kendall and Zach's to see for herself that Zach is back in town and thank him for getting her out of a jam with the Miranda scandal. Zach later announced to Kendall that he'd like to focus on the Miranda Center, but Kendall wanted to know what's going on with his casinos. They agreed to table the discussion for now and enjoy their remaining quiet time while the kids are asleep. While she was out of the room, Zach tucked away a mysterious file.
Erica probed Caleb about his past and wondered if JR was going to dredge up something that could harm the company. Caleb insisted that not everything is about business and that some things are personal, all while clutching a printout of an article about a woman's tragic accident on October 31, 1990. Erica later walked in on Caleb as he was talking to a portrait of Palmer, wondering who planted the article.
On the stand, Jack questioned Ryan about his history with Greenlee, and Ryan flashed back to moments like their first meeting and their wedding. He looked guiltily at Madison as he was forced to talk about his and Greenlee's unusual bond. Jack asked Ryan how he felt when he thought Greenlee had died, and Ryan admitted it was as though he'd lost part of himself. He also confessed that he never approved of her marriage to David, which was no secret to the Haywards. Ryan recalled that the night of David's death, Dr. Hayward threatened to take Greenlee away from Pine Valley forever. Jack pressed Ryan to say he realized that night that he still loved Greenlee and didn't want to let her go. Ryan didn't deny his assertion and confirmed for the court that he and David fought, but that he has no memory of what happened afterward. Liza objected to Jack's probing, and the judge called recess. Damon arrived and tattled to Liza that he overheard Nick gloating at the bar and that Pearson seemed particularly happy that Ryan was about to go down. Liza agreed that this was odd behavior for a guy who'd insisted on laying low before his testimony. Ryan followed Madison out and apologized for what she had to hear about Greenlee. "You don't have to say it," she told him. "We're over."
Wednesday
Today's episode was a re-broadcast. New episodes return Oct. 28.
Thursday
Tad told JR he had an epiphany after seeing Jack fight for Greenlee in court and realized he should be supporting JR in the custody battle. "Your life is a mess," Tad pointed out. Tad urged JR to prove to Marissa that he was a responsible parent. "I don't have to prove anything; especially to Marissa," JR declared. Tad was worried by the look in his eye, noting it was just like Adam. "I am not my father," JR insisted.
Annie returned to the beach house and started reading a book, which she then threw across the room. Her engagement ring came off in the process, so she rushed to retrieve it. She thought about her wedding to Scott and having sex with JR, then took off the ring and went for a swim. JR entered and found the rings just as a bra-and-panty-clad Annie returned to the house. She asked what he was doing there; he brought a doll for Emma, he explained. She was shivering from swimming in the cold water, so he asked if she was okay. She said she was flooded with memories and needed a distraction; he lamented that he needed one, too, because he was upset about AJ. She took his hand and told him he wasn't alone. They began to kiss.
Krystal and Marissa met for a bite and discussed the custody battle. AJ came to the table with his Halloween costume. Krystal asked if he was missing anything. "Daddy," he sadly replied. Tad came in, spied a bereft AJ and asked what was going on. Krystal explained he wanted to trick-or-treat with his father. Tad assured them that JR was equally devastated to be separated from his son and revealed that Annie was no longer living at the manse. He implored Marissa to let AJ spend time with JR. An affected Marissa brought AJ to the house, but JR wasn't there. She headed to the beach cottage and walked in on Annie and JR making out. She prevented AJ from coming inside. JR came storming out and demanded to see his son. No way, she spat and headed back to see Krystal and Tad. She told them what went down.
Damon told Liza that Nick Pearson was at Confusion. They headed over. Liza approached him at the bar. "Well, if it isn't the hottest D.A. In town," he greeted, then invited her to have a drink. She ordered a dirty martini. She admitted she was surprised to see him there. He asked her not to tell Tad, Ryan or Jack. She got him all liquored up and he opened up to her. She hurried to the courthouse and told Damon to get Nick sobered up. "You're going to help me with my case," Liza told Nick before heading out.
Greenlee was still reeling from Ryan's testimony. "He said too much," she feared, adding that none of what he said about her mattered if either one of them wound up in prison.... Ryan tried to explain what he said to Madison, but she shrugged that he clearly never stopped loving Greenlee. He apologized. Greenlee walked into the hall and found them hugging. She returned to Jack and asked her father to stop pushing Ryan so hard on the stand. "Whenever we're together, bad things happen," she noted. Back in the hallway, Madison and Ryan had an awkward breakup. She told Ryan to go to Greenlee. He said he was lucky to have gotten to know Madison and promised to be there for her if she ever needed him. "Like you're there for Greenlee?" she asked. He tried to talk some more, but she hurried off.... Liza returned to the courthouse to cross-examine Ryan with the information she received from Nick. She questioned Ryan about his past as a con man, then revealed that Nick held a grudge against Ryan for getting him fired from his hotel job years earlier.... Ryan vowed to get to the bottom of everything. Greenlee asked Jack to put her on the stand.
Madison met Frankie at Confusion and told him about her breakup. He was stunned. She recounted what happened at the courthouse. He consoled her.
Friday
At Wildwind, Caleb thought about Sonia's death. Bianca joined him downstairs and noted that the kids love Halloween. Zach and Kendall soon arrived with their sons and offered to help Bianca put the rest of her party decorations up. Zach noted that Caleb didn't seem to like Halloween. "It's just ghosts," he sighed, with this obviously having a double meaning, but added that things are better now that he has his family here. Zach agreed that family can change a man. Bianca implored Caleb to help decorate. He obliged, but kept thinking about Sonia. The ladies wanted to cheer him up, but Zach advised them to just let him be. Zach then noted to Caleb how it's not always easy to let go of the past. He offered to help Caleb "escape" the party, but Caleb turned him down.
Erica showed off her sexy Halloween costume to Jackson, but he was so involved in work, he ignored her. She urged him to come to Bianca's party with her, but he was determined to save Greenlee and win her case. Erica noted that not every case is winnable. Jackson asked if she really believes that Greens had killed David. Erica admitted that she does think that Greenlee is guilty. Jackson was furious, but she insisted that she was on his side.
Marissa, dressed as a witch, took AJ to Krystal's restaurant — where Krystal was also dressed like a witch. JR entered and Krystal told him to let Marissa go. JR insisted that he wasn't there to cause trouble and would never hurt his son. He hoped that Marissa would let him see AJ for half an hour. Krystal replied that the little boy would be having fun at Bianca and Miranda's party. Opal, dressed as gypsy, later arrived to help Krystal ward off rowdy teens that evening. Marissa admitted that AJ was hoping to see his dad. AJ showed them his wolf costume. Marissa tried to psyche him up for the party, but AJ was disappointed that his father wouldn't be there.
Colby presented Damon with a wolf costume. Their fun mood changed when she noted that Asher's mom had died on Halloween, his birthday. Asher entered and Colby suggested he celebrate his birthday, but he refused. JR joined them and told Asher that he needed his help. He explained to Colby that Marissa is trying to keep his son away from him. JR vowed to get him back and feared that Marissa was turning AJ against him. Colby decided not to go to the party, either, so that she could try to smooth things over between JR and Marissa. Damon lamented that he'd wasted $40 on his costume. JR called his lawyer. Asher overheard and asked if he was planning something. JR seethed that Caleb had stolen his son. Asher agreed to help JR get his son back from Marissa and crush Caleb in the process.
Erica stopped by Wildwind and was happy to see Zach. Kendall noted that something was bothering Caleb. Erica encouraged him to get into the holiday spirit, but he grunted that he didn't have time. The Slaters left so that they could take the kids trick or treating. Caleb went upstairs and Erica asked Bianca what was bugging him. Bianca said that she didn't know and Erica suspected that he was hiding something. When Bianca stepped away, Erica looked through Caleb's folder and read the article about Sonia being killed on Halloween. She put the folder down when the doorbell rang; it was Marissa and AJ. Colby then stopped by and AJ was thrilled to see her. He admitted that he missed his dad. Meanwhile, Erica tried to get Caleb to open up and questioned him about the death. Caleb told her that she was out of line.... Marissa asked to speak with Colby alone and asked what she was doing there. Colby answered that she was invited by Bianca. She asked if she could make peace between Marissa and JR, but Marissa asked her to leave. "This isn't your house," Colby reminded her, but agreed to go for AJ's sake.... Miranda tried to party with Caleb, but he wasn't in the mood. Erica confessed to Caleb about reading the article and asked if he was reliving the incident. He blamed himself for Sonia's death.
The Slaters took their son to Krystal's. Kendall thanked Zach for being there. "There's no place I'd rather be," he told her. She was relieved that they were back on track. They returned home after trick or treating at three houses, unaware of a shadowy figure lurking outside. Zach suspected that someone was tailing them, but assured Kendall that they were safe. The figure continued to peer in the window.
Jackson went to see Krystal and confided in her about his rift with Erica. Krystal noted that just because Erica doesn't agree with him doesn't mean that she doesn't support him. Jackson worried that he wasn't doing a good enough job establishing Greenlee's innocence. Krystal assured him that he was doing a great job and that she believed that Greens didn't do it. Later, Jackson stopped by the party and asked Erica if they could start the evening over again. He realized that he'd interrupted an intense conversation between her and Caleb. She apologized for saying what she had about Greenlee, but he told her that she shouldn't lie to him just to make him feel better. He also assured her that he's not angry, but noted that she and Caleb seemed to be dealing with something important. She replied that the only thing important in her life was Jackson.... Asher put on the wolf costume and went to Wildwind. He then showed himself to AJ and offered to take him to JR.
