While Carly gripped pills tightly in her hand, she was tormented by memories of a call with Nicholas. Carly phoned Melanie, but was unable to reach her. Though her hands were shaking, Carly tossed her pills into the trash. Lexie noticed that Carly's hands were fisted and commented, "Looks like you're ready for a fight."
Nicole fretted over Fay's warning about EJ, while Taylor assured her that Fay was well cared for in the hospital. EJ was surprised when Nicole and Taylor returned unexpectedly to the mansion. "Car trouble," Nicole shared. EJ volunteered to take them to the hospital and they accepted. Meanwhile, Rafe 2 disguised himself as a doctor and slipped into Fay's room. Fay frantically tried buzzing for help, but the chord broke. Rafe 2 explained, "You know I can't have you around knowing what you know." Fay pleaded for her life, but Rafe 2 was unmoved. Instead, he grabbed a pillow and held it over Fay's face until the fight — and her life — slipped away. Wearing a surgical mask, Rafe 2 quietly slipped away. Near the elevator, he avoided being detected by EJ. At the nurse's station, Nicole and Taylor panicked when they heard distress alarms coming from Fay's room. A nurse barred the sisters from the room, while Carly and Lexie tried to revive Fay. A moment later, Carly stepped out of the room and told them, "I'm so sorry." Nicole and Taylor broke down in tears. EJ comforted a weeping Nicole. Carly explained that Fay suffered a stroke and added it couldn't be helped. Nicole wanted an autopsy, but EJ advised her against it because the ordeal would be rough on both her and Taylor. Nicole stepped into Fay's room for an emotional farewell. A moment later, Taylor and EJ joined Nicole. EJ gently led Nicole away from her mother's bed. Taylor stepped out to phone Brandon. Nicole asked EJ to be nice to Taylor. "I have you," Nicole noted. "She's going through this alone. In the lobby, Taylor left a message for Brandon asking him to call. Taylor expressed remorse for being distracted by thoughts of EJ, while her mother clung to life, and then fell apart in his arms. In Fay's room, Nicole promised to find out what Fay was trying to warn her.
At the station, Roman verbally reprimanded Rafe 2 for disappearing without explanation. Lexie phoned Roman with news of Fay's death. Rafe 2 probed Roman about the call and Roman said that Fay died of natural causes.
Chloe had qualms about leaving Parker alone while she spent the evening out with Philip. He assured Chloe that Parker had plenty of people watching over him. While searching the waterfront for her misplaced scarf, Vivian encountered Chloe and Philip. Vivian froze in her tracks and asked, "Philip, what are you doing with her?" Philip defended Chloe, while Vivian took pleasure insulting her. Fed up, Philip wrapped his hands around Vivian's neck and advised her to step off. At the Brady pub, Philip encouraged Chloe to do something for herself. Chloe was surprised when she saw her musician friend, Jimmy, enter with his guitar. "It's open mic night," Jimmy smiled. "Are you going to sing?" Chloe protested to Philip that she wasn't prepared to sing. Philip threatened to sing "Macarthur Park" if Chloe didn't perform. "I love to hear you sing," he assured. Finally, Chloe consented. Philip rose and introduced her to the crowd. While Jimmy gently strummed the guitar, Chloe captivated the crowd with her rendition of "Motherless Child."
Vivian used the key that Gus gave her and slipped into the DiMera mansion. She was surprised by Chad, who introduced himself as Stefano's son. Vivian explained that she was Stefano's friend. Stefano arrived and demanded to know why Vivian was in his home. Chad revealed that she let herself in. "You have made a very serious mistake," Stefano warned Vivian. Stefano instructed Chad to go up to his room while he had a chat with Vivian. Vivian lied that the door was ajar and she stepped in to say hello. Stefano didn't believe her. "You broke into my house," Stefano insisted. "We have to decide how you will pay for this mistake." Stefano was interrupted by a phone call. Distracted, Stefano ordered Vivian to leave his home. Gus managed to gain entry to the DiMera basement and informed Vivian that a prisoner was recently held captive in a cell. "Stefano, what are you up to?" Vivian wondered aloud.

Nicole had a nightmare regarding her mother's mysterious warning about EJ. While Taylor looked at a photo of Fay, EJ entered the room. He wanted to talk, but Taylor insisted it wasn't the time. The doorbell interrupted them. EJ was irked that Rafe 2 once again showed up at the door unannounced. Rafe 2 offered Taylor condolences. When Taylor questioned how Rafe 2 knew Fay, he claimed it was FBI business. Taylor excused herself to check on Nicole. Rafe 2 informed EJ that he and Sami had a huge fight and he doubted the marriage would last much longer. "Thought that would cheer you up," Rafe 2 remarked. After Rafe 2 left, Nicole confronted EJ and asked if he was keeping a secret from her. EJ denied it. She and Taylor left to make funeral arrangements. "Something's not right," EJ confided to Stefano. EJ also updated Stefano on Rafe 2's meeting. "I don't trust the guy," EJ protested. Stefano reasoned that once Sami and Rafe's marriage was over, they would no longer have to deal with Rafe 2. Nicole overheard EJ and Stefano talking about Rafe and it aroused her curiosity.
While Melanie was jogging, a masked man approached her from behind with a knife. He warned Melanie to drop the reward for information on Arianna's hit-and-run accident. Dario appeared and punched the masked man. He knocked Dario down and escaped. "I think that was the guy who killed Arianna," said Melanie. Melanie and Dario went to the station and tried to report the incident to Rafe 2, but he claimed to be too busy and tried to pass them off to another detective. Dario and Melanie decided to do their own investigation.
Carly pretended she slipped in the shower and had an injured elbow. Lexie wrote her a prescription for painkillers. Daniel saw Carly with the painkillers and insisted on looking at her elbow. Carly snapped at him.
Maxine was bewildered when Jennifer insisted she sit in on the meeting with Daniel. During the meeting, the attraction between Daniel and Jennifer was evident to Maxine. She received a page and excused herself. Daniel suggested to Jennifer that they address their feelings for one another. Each wrote off their attraction as a rebound, and privately resolved to keep their distance from each other.
An exhausted Rafe 2 arrived home and instructed Johnny to get him a beer from the refrigerator.

Nicole eavesdropped on EJ and Stefano as they discussed their secret that involved Rafe. Before she got the full story, EJ and Stefano became aware of her presence. Nicole quickly covered. Meanwhile, Sami was outraged to learn that Rafe 2 asked Johnny to fetch him a beer. Their argument escalated and Sami announced that she was leaving with the kids to visit her brother Eric. Rafe 2 was thrilled by Sami's departure. Sami visited EJ and received his permission to take Johnny and Sydney with her to see Eric. At the loft, Nicole paid a surprised visit to Rafe 2, intent on questioning him about the secret he shared with EJ and Stefano. Nicole saw the piece of paper with Eric's name on it and asked Rafe 2 about it. He informed Nicole that Sami took the kids and left him. Nicole gave Rafe 2 a sympathetic hug. Rafe 2 misunderstood Nicole's intentions and pulled her in for a powerful kiss.
Bo and Hope greeted the morning refreshed after a blissful night of making love. Ciara overheard a fragment of their conversation and misunderstood. Under the impression that her parents were fighting, Ciara suggested to Theo that they run away. They hopped aboard a truck and headed out of Salem. Bo and Hope panicked when they realized that Ciara and Theo were missing. Ciara and Theo hid in the woods and made a camp.
Carly refused to let Daniel examine her elbow, worried that he would discover there was no injury. On edge, she also blew up at Jennifer. Daniel saw that Jennifer was upset and comforted her. They expressed concern for Carly. In her office, Carly took some painkillers. Under the calming influence of the medication, Carly apologized to Daniel and Jennifer for her earlier outburst. Daniel sensed something was wrong and Carly claimed she was sad because of an upsetting call with her son Nicholas. Later, Jennifer and Daniel continued to fight their feelings for each other.

Nicole slapped Rafe 2 for kissing her. She assumed that once again Rafe was using her to get information on EJ. "How many times do you think you can use me?" Nicole asked. "When EJ finds out that you kissed me he is going to kill you!" Rafe 2 quickly backpedaled and blamed his head injury for his inappropriate behavior. Nicole agreed to act like it never happened. Alone, Nicole was clearly determined to uncover the mysterious connection between Rafe and EJ. Meanwhile, EJ informed Stefano that Sami took the kids and went to Eric's. Stefano said that he was worried about controlling Nicole. Later, EJ consoled Taylor, who was deeply grieving Fay's death. Later, EJ visited Rafe 2 and congratulated him for pushing Sami away. Rafe 2 let it slip that Nicole dropped by, which alarmed EJ. Nicole confided to Taylor that the secret Fay spoke of involved Rafe.
Bo and Hope realized that Ciara deliberately ran away. Hope called Ciara's cell phone, but she refused to answer. "If I go back home, Mommy and Daddy will get divorced," Ciara confided to Theo. At the hospital, Lexie sensed Abe was hurting over Fay's death and comforted him. Hope phoned Lexie and informed her that Theo ran away with Ciara. Lexie and Abe headed directly for Bo and Hope's house, where Bo assured everyone that the children would be found.
Abigail encouraged Chad to join her in a summer internship at the hospital. Chad responded that he accepted a job at DiMera Enterprises. Abigail tried to hide her dismay, but Chad realized she disapproved of his decision to work for Stefano. "Have you really convinced yourself that everything is legit?" Abigail probed. Chad protested that he had to learn to trust his dad. "Okay, just don't jump in with both feet," Abigail warned. Stefano invited Kate to join him for dinner with Chad. At the Brady pub, Chad announced he had second thoughts about working for his dad. Stefano and Kate realized that Abigail held a strong influence over Chad. Kate advised Stefano to get Abigail out of Chad's life before she turned son against father.

Bo and Hope continued to frantically track down Ciara and Theo. Abe consoled Lexie, who fretted about Theo's safety. "Let's get out there and find them!" Lexie pleaded. Abe and Lexie went to the hospital and checked the database for injured children. Roman updated Bo and Hope on the hunt for the children, but didn't have any solid leads. Bo and Hope grew closer as they worked as a team to find their daughter. They checked the e-mails on Ciara's computer and realized she ran away because she thought her parents were unhappy because of her. Ciara refused to answer Hope's call and secured a promise from Theo that he also wouldn't answer, no matter what. Later, Ciara fell and was knocked unconscious. Theo panicked when he couldn't wake her. He was torn when Hope called again, wondering if he should go against Ciara's wishes and answer.
EJ questioned Rafe 2 about Nicole's visit and he didn't provide a satisfactory answer. Rafe 2 accused EJ of being jealous. Later, EJ worried that Nicole overheard his conversation with Stefano about Rafe. Stefano suggested they get Rafe 2 out of town while Nicole attended her mother's funeral in Chicago. That way, Nicole would lose access to Rafe 2. EJ and Stefano informed Rafe 2 it was time to leave Salem, but first he had to play out all his goodbyes to make his exit look authentic. Meanwhile, Nicole resisted telling Taylor that she didn't trust EJ. While talking to Nicole, Taylor covered her feeling for EJ. Taylor met with Maggie and admitted that she'd like to have someone special in her life, especially in the aftermath of Fay's death. EJ and Stefano arrived home and found Nicole talking to thin air. They didn't realize that she was having an imaginary conversation with Fay about her warning. "I was telling my mother how much I missed her," Nicole explained. "It was comforting." Later, EJ and Nicole played a cat and mouse game, trying to get information out of each other. EJ told Taylor and Nicole they needed to leave for the funeral immediately.
After chugging down a beer, Rafe 2 decided to ignore EJ and Stefano's instructions to make his proper good-byes. Instead, he wanted to leave Salem immediately. Rafe 2 packed his bags, but was stopped by Will and Gabi, who wanted to arrange an intervention to get Sami and Rafe back together.
Philip informed Chloe that Social Services decided against her having shared custody of Parker. He left to talk to a lawyer and ran into Kate. They argued over Philip's concern for Chloe. Kate was disgusted to find Chloe sitting alone drinking. She criticized Chloe for being a terrible mother and promised to keep both Philip and Parker out of her life. Fed up, Chloe threw a drink in Kate's face.
