DAYS Week of December 1, 2008
Monday
EJ was at home looking for Nicole. Mary the maid blabbed that she'd heard Nic crying after speaking with Brady. In the meantime, Nicole was at the clinic freaking out to Dr. Baker about her miscarriage. He had bad news: Nicole's odds of getting pregnant again are slim. She emotionally pointed out that she'd been told she was infertile before, but the doctor insisted that even if she did conceive again, she wouldn't be able to carry the baby to term. After leaving Dr. Baker, Nic went shopping for maternity clothes. The salesgirl pulled out a strap-on pregnancy pad to show Nic how she'd look with a big bump. Much to the clerk's surprise, Nicole asked to purchase the fake belly. In the meantime, EJ paid a visit to Dr. Baker to get information on how the pregnancy is coming along, but Baker refused to breach doctor/patient confidentiality.
A grim Daniel admitted to Kate that he looked over her test results: She's now in Stage 4. Kate wept that it was her bad karma coming back to get her. Daniel grabbed her and made it clear that cancer is not her fault. He wiped her tears and vowed that he'd work with her oncologist to beat this.
In the park, Lucas teased Chloe with talk of her Christmas gift, then pulled out a small, black box. After she begged to get her present early, he handed it over. Inside the box was a key to their dream house. Lucas produced another small box — with a ring inside! "I love you with all my heart and soul," Lucas declared before dropping to one knee and and popping the question. Chloe enthusiastically said yes. The moment turned sad when Lucas got a call from Kate reporting that her cancer had spread. Lucas and Chloe rushed to the hospital, where they met Kate. Daniel pulled them aside to say that Kate needs a bone marrow transplant.
Brady met Marlena at the Pub, just as she was telling him about John agreeing to see a therapist, John walked up. He blasted Marlena for discussing his business and called off going to therapy. After Brady criticized John's secrecy, John bluntly announced that he is a DiMera — and so is Brady. "Why am I learning about this now," asked an aghast Brady. John advised his son to, "suck it up and be a man." Brady retorted that maybe John doesn't have the guts to get therapy and stormed away." Afterward, John told Marlena he'd see the therapist. A short while later, he bumped into a pretty blonde, who dropped a file. John stooped to pick them up, but balked when he realized that the woman was carrying a file on him that only Dr. Taylor should have. The woman introduced herself as Dr. Taylor — Charlotte Taylor.
Brady visited Nicole at the mansion and called her on keeping the miscarriage from EJ. She confessed her fear of losing EJ. Brady comforted her with a hug. Enter EJ, who was not pleased.
Tuesday
Bo visited Max at the Cheatin' Heart and gave him the box Trent left for him. An angry Max said he didn't want it. Bo urged him to take a look, but Max refused. Bo left the box with Max, then said Hope would be calling to invite him over to dinner.
Stephanie got a financial report for Philip and called his office, but he wasn't in. Turns out, he was with Melanie at Maggie's. Phil told Melanie that her job at Titan started ASAP. Steph arrived at Maggie's and was floored that he hired Mel. Melanie was happy it rattled her rival. Philip and Steph left. She asked why he hired Melanie. Philip explained that he had a change of heart and decided to give her a chance. Max visited his sister, who told him about her new job. She groused that it was a little boring. He advised her not to cut corners and try and get one over on Philip. She said she wouldn't. He presented the box and explained he was giving it to her.
Sami was happy Rafe was back and asked where he had been. He told her he was on a fact-finding mission and got some information about EJ. Sami told Rafe that if EJ ever learned she was deceiving him about the baby, he would never forgive her. Rafe found Sami's St. Anne's medal and questioned her about it. She claimed it was hers, but he saw the engraving from the Convent of the Holy Cross and realized she sneaked out while he was gone. She admitted that she did. He asked her why. She said she was sad and lonely and missing her kids and wanted to light a candle and pray. When she told him she spoke to a nun, he wasn't thrilled. Sami said she was hoping they could to back. Rafe said it was a bad idea, but he would take her. She was elated and hugged him. They arrived at the church and asked to see Sister Theresa. While they were waiting, Rafe told Sami about how he used to go there all the time when he was younger and how one of the nuns saved him from becoming a punky screw-up. They bonded.
A teary Nicole asked Brady to give her some time before she had to tell EJ the truth about her miscarriage. She urged Brady to keep mum. He gave her a hug, just as EJ walked in and demanded to know what was going on. "It's nothing," Nicole insisted, but EJ noted that she was clearly upset. He asked if something was wrong with the baby. Nicole said no and lied that she was talking to Brady about John. Brady added that he had just discovered that John and Stefano were half-brothers and that he was in denial about having DiMera blood. EJ got a call from Stefano and excused himself. Brady warned Nicole against messing with the DiMeras, then left. EJ asked Nicole what was going on. She teased him that he was jealous of his cousin. He said he didn't care about Brady and just wanted to talk about the baby. EJ asked why she was upset earlier. Nicole fibbed that Dr. Baker told her she couldn't be intimate with EJ. EJ insisted on going to see Dr. Baker and having her checked out. Nic made an emergency call while EJ got his coat. They arrived at the clinic to talk to the doc.
Brady and Bo ran into each other for the first time at the Brady Pub and caught up. Bo warned him to steer clear of Nicole. Brady reported that Nicole was turning her life around. He then asked about EJ. Bo said he couldn't be trusted.
Wednesday
At the church, Sami and Rafe met with Sister Theresa. Sami asked to speak to the nun in private, but Rafe said no. Sami implored him for some time alone. Rafe asked Sister Theresa if she knew Sister Agnes. She said no but that Sister Agnes was there when the church was also an orphanage. She noted that she and "Colleen" had discussed the orphanage the day before. Rafe spied a man in a hooded sweatshirt and grabbed him, thinking he was after Sami. Sister T told Rafe the man was a friend of the church and to unhand him. Sami and Rafe were asked to leave the church. When they returned to the loft, Sami insisted on seeing the nun again. Rafe teased her for working him over to get to the church the first time and pushed her to admit why she wanted to see the nun again. Sami claimed that Sister Theresa reminded her of a nun who was good to her when she was younger. He listened to her story then said she was not going back to the church until the mayor's killer was caught. "Jerk," Sami exclaimed.
Marlena looked for John at the Brady Pub but ran into Kayla. Doc Evans revealed to Kayla that John had agreed to see a psychiatrist. In the park, John met with Dr. Charlotte Taylor, the daughter of Marlena's old professor, Kenneth. Charlotte explained that her father had passed away and she was taking on his caseload. During their meeting, Steve approached John and reported that he didn't have any leads on the mayor's murder. When John returned to Charlotte, he was surprised that she didn't ask him about Steve. She said it didn't seem relevant to John's case. They discussed his symptoms and how he was feeling.
Steve met up with Kayla at the Brady Pub. When she went to change Joe's diaper, Marlena and Steve caught up. She told him about her trip to Colorado and how Eric was going to visit Carrie and Austin in Switzerland for the holidays. "It's gonna be kind of a quiet Christmas this year," she noted. Steve expressed his condolences over her divorce from John. Marlena went to take a call and Steve and Kayla planned a romantic rendezvous back at their place. "Let's go home, put Joe down, get you all liquored up, light some candles, put on some Barry White," he smiled. John and Charlotte arrived at the Pub. Marlena strode over and introduced herself to Charlotte.
EJ and Nicole talked to Dr. Baker at the clinic. EJ just wanted to be sure that the baby was okay. He then noted that Nicole seemed nervous. She said she was just rattled being back in the clinic. He apologized to her for leaving her alone at the cabin and vowed to never leave her side again. She said she wished she never had gone to the lodge. "It ruined everything," she announced. He asked what she meant. She explained that they were supposed to have a romantic night and now they couldn't be intimate until the baby was born. He responded that he would be patient. Dr. Baker entered and wanted to get started with the examination.
Mary delivered a letter to Stefano at the mansion. He asked where Elvis was, but she didn't know. He called EJ, who wasn't thrilled to hear from his father because he was with Nicole. EJ explained that Nicole was having complications with the pregnancy. Stefano was alarmed. While EJ was occupied on his call, Nicole chatted with Dr. Baker and asked him to lie to EJ that she was still pregnant. He balked, so she pulled out some personal information she had on him (three ex-wives for starters) and intimated that she wasn't above blackmailing him to do what she asked. EJ returned and Dr. Baker lied that the baby was fine. After, he was called to deal with an emergency. Nicole tried to hurry out, but EJ stopped her. He told her he knew she was more concerned about the baby than she was letting on. Back at the manse, Stefano called a specialist in Zurich, planning to fly him to Salem to check out Nicole.
Thursday
Chelsea visited Max at the Cheatin' Heart and told him that Kate was doing badly. She was bummed that she couldn't be tested as a bone-marrow match. "I'm useless," she sighed. Max tough loved her and reminded her that she had already given up part of her pancreas to save Bo and wasn't the only one who could save Kate.
In the park, Lucas reported to Chloe that Billie, Austin and Will had all been tested as bone-marrow donors for Kate. They kissed to get his mind off of Kate, then returned to the cabin and had sex. He told her that the engagement should be a happy time for her and he was sorry that they had to keep it a secret. She said that she got to tell her parents and asked Nicole to be a bridesmaid and that she was happy with him.
Philip sat with his mother at the hospital. She told him to go back to work, insisting she didn't need him to hold her hand. He responded that he just wanted to be with her. Daniel came in and reported that they were processing the tests from Billie, Austin and Will. Kate was hit with pain, which alarmed Philip. A weepy Kate told Philip that if the treatment got too bad, he'd have to respect whatever decision she made about her care. She then asked him to leave so she could talk to Daniel. Kate asked the doc if he was getting too personally involved because of what happened with his wife. Daniel insisted it was all about Kate. Philip ran into Stephanie, who had papers for him to sign. She asked about Kate. He said he was hopeful they'd get good news about finding a match. Stephanie gave him a friendly hug.
At Maggie's, Melanie worked on the computer, then decided to take a break. Melanie headed out and ran into Maggie on the pier. Maggie could tell that Melanie was rattled and asked what was going on. Melanie explained that she was studying for her new job. She commented that Philip was mean and stuck up. Maggie defended him, explaining that Philip wasn't like that and he is just very focused on Kate. Maggie told her about the bone-marrow search; Melanie said she would be tested. She headed to the hospital and spied Philip and Steph's embrace. She approached Philip after Steph left. He angrily asked what she was going there. She said she was there to be tested, so he softened and apologized, but she hurried off. When Melanie returned to the pier, she ran into Maggie again, told her what happened and lamented that she couldn't do anything right. Maggie suggested she leave Philip alone. Melanie thought it was good advice. They headed home.
Daniel brought a Christmas ornament into Kate's room. "It's hideous," she joked. A nurse brought the lab results in. Philip entered and asked what was up. Kate asked him to call Lucas. He did, then called Chelsea. Everyone headed to the hospital. Daniel came in and told them he found a match: It's Chloe.
Steph bought hot chocolate for her parents and met them in the park. They could tell she was bothered when she reacted strongly to dropping one of the cups. She told them about Kate and Philip and how she hated to see him in pain.
Marlena was surprised to meet Charlotte Taylor and discover that she was Kenneth's daughter. Charlotte explained that she took over her father's practice. Marlena wondered why Charlotte didn't notify her about it. The conversation got tense. Marlena expressed her condolences over Kenneth's death. Charlotte thanked her, then admitted that the relationship between John and Marlena was her one reservation about taking him on as a patient. Marlena asked why. Charlotte noted that the boundaries were blurred. "Oh, I hate when that happens," John cracked. Dr. Taylor admitted that she worried that Marlena would interfere with John's treatment. Doc Evans said she wouldn't. John said he wanted to continue working with Charlotte, then took a phone call, leaving the two shrinks to chat. Marlena pointed out that Salem was a long commute from Charlotte's other hospital. Charlotte explained that she was leaving the hospital and relocating to University Hospital. Marlena offered to help make her transition easier. Charlotte thanked her and shared that her office space was right next to Marlena's.
Friday
Sami put the TV on and urged Rafe to come out of the shower to watch a ballet with her. With Rafe occupied, Sami grabbed her flyer from the church and went to leave the safe loft. She opened the door to find Rafe standing there. She screamed and was annoyed that he set her up. He pointed out that it just proved she couldn't be trusted. He took off his shirt, saying he was changing to go out and went in the other room. When he came out, Sami was upset that she was separated from her family at Christmas. He softened and told her there was a good surprise waiting for her. He also apologized for being jerky. She told him not to mention anything about Christmas because it made her too sad. Just then, Hilda came in, singing Christmas carols and carrying a tree. "How could you do this to me?" Sami cried. Rafe offered to get rid of the tree, but Sami decided to keep it. Rafe prepared to go undercover as a television repairman, but Sami implored him not to take on the DiMeras. He left. Hilda pulled out new photos of Allie and Johnny for her to look at; Sami was overjoyed. Hilda told her she had to keep the photos a secret from Rafe, but Sami teased Hilda that she just didn't want anyone to know she did something nice. Hilda smirked. They had a bonding chat.
Lucas and Chloe visited Kate. Chloe felt badly that she couldn't donate her bone marrow to Kate because of her previous experience with cancer. Daniel, meanwhile, toiled on his computer, determined to find a way to make it work. Back in Kate's room, Lucas gave her a gift: A handprint of Will's from years ago. Lucas hung it near her IV bags. Kate suspected something more was going on between Chloe and Lucas, so Lucas admitted that he proposed to her. Kate said that she could see that Lucas was happy with Chloe and gave them her blessing. Daniel came in and said he had some good news and that he thought he found a way to get her the transplant from Chloe through some special procedure that was being developed by a friend of his at Harvard. Daniel noted that there would be considerable risk to Chloe, so Kate refused to let Chloe do it. Chloe insisted on donating her bone marrow, then asked to talk to Daniel to get more information. Alone with Lucas, Kate urged him to change Chloe's mind.
Nicole came into the living room at the DiMera mansion and found Stefano enjoying a nightcap. He asked her if she wanted to join, but she pointed out that she was pregnant and couldn't. Stefano said he wanted to talk to her about her pregnancy. EJ came in during the conversation. Stefano explained that he was having a famous obstetrician flown in from Switzerland to examine her. "No! No! Absolutely not, Nicole exclaimed, then said that she didn't like Stefano and EJ discussing her baby behind her back. As EJ smirked, Nicole lit into Stefano, then told them if anything like that ever happened again, she would "rethink everything." Stefano told Nicole that he acted alone and urged her not to blame Elvis. When Stefano left the room, EJ noted to Nicole that he didn't think she'd react that way, but that he and his father thought they were doing a good thing for her. He then added that he didn't know what he would do if he lost her or the baby. Stefano came in and summoned his son to do business. Nicole told Mary that she was going shopping. But first, she readjusted her fake tummy and decided to change outfits.
Rafe arrived at the manse to repair the TV while EJ and Stefano were out. He went upstairs to poke around and entered Nicole's room. She was in the closet and came out with her fake belly in her hand, but his back was turned so he didn't see her.
At the pier, the Phoenix told his son that they were meeting with some diamond smugglers. Ramon and Juan arrived and showed Stefano the diamonds they had. EJ handed over a suitcase of money and then the men double-crossed the DiMeras, pulled out guns and demanded their diamonds back.
