DAYS Week of October 27, 2008

Monday

Melanie read the mysterious note, noting someone knew what happened in the cemetery. She considered burning it, when Nick knocked at the door. Nick came in, explaining he was worried about her. Melanie said she was fine. Nick noticed her packed bags. Melanie admitted she was leaving Salem. Nick told her running away would only make her look more guilty. He vowed to protect her. He cared about her and knew she felt the connection between them.

Chelsea arrived at the Java Café and cried to one of the patrons about Kate. Nick and Melanie walked in. Melanie thanked Nick for being a friend, as they conspired to find a plan to help her beat the murder rap. Chelsea approached Nick. Melanie and Chelsea got into it. Chelsea said Nick didn't see Melanie for “the scheming bitch” she was and accused her of murdering her father. Melanie countered with the fact that Chelsea ran down her brother and killed him. Chelsea slapped Melanie, noting Nick deserved better. Then she stormed off. Nick fetched Melanie tea and promised he'd come up with a plan by tomorrow. Melanie searched the Internet on her cell for the first flight out of Salem.

EJ asked Sami what Johnny meant when he touched her stomach and said, “Baby.” Sami went off about almost getting shot, having to join the witness protection program, and not knowing when she'd see her babies again. Chloe interrupted. Lucas explained Sami was having a hard time saying goodbye. EJ pressed about Johnny's "baby" comment. Sami said the tyke was learning new words. Roman announced it was time to go. Sami sobbed and said goodbye to the twins. Outside, Roman introduced Sami to Darrell. Sami was to do everything he said and have no contact with her friends or family — particularly EJ.

Chloe and Lucas discussed Sami leaving. Chloe was glad, but thought Lucas seemed heartbroken. Lucas swore he wasn't. He just felt badly for Allie. Chloe wondered what would happen once they caught the sniper, noting Sami could be back next week. Lucas doubted it, thinking Sami would be gone for a long time. Suddenly, Chloe got it — Sami was using the witness protection to keep her pregnancy a secret from E.J. Lucas made Chloe promise not to tell anyone Sami's secret. Later, Lucas and Chloe got romantic.

Nicole read a baby book detailing the downside of pregnancy, like varicose veins and hemorrhoids, while she wondered where EJ was. Later, EJ returned and Nicole lectured him about running to Sami's side. EJ just wanted to make sure Johnny was safe. The tyke fell asleep in the car, so EJ carried him up to bed. Nicole suggested taking EJ up to bed. EJ told Nicole about the sniper and went out for a walk. Johnny started crying. Nicole tended to the tyke, who needed a diaper change. She gave him some milk and ended up covered in it. EJ returned to find Nicole asleep, while Johnny and Pookie played. Nicole woke up and Johnny was nowhere in sight. She panicked. EJ asked what she'd done with his son, before admitting he was kidding. He'd put Johnny to bed. Nicole and EJ started kissing. Nicole asked when Sami was coming back. EJ noted it wouldn't be for a very long time.

At the safe house, Roman gave Darrell his instructions and said goodbye to Sami. When Darrell went outside for a smoke, Sami found an envelope in her purse containing pictures of Johnny. Darrell returned, and Sami said EJ must have left the pix for her. Darrell searched Sami's suitcase to see if EJ had planted a tracking device. Suddenly, Darrell heard noises outside and went to check. Meanwhile, the sniper was on the phone reporting that Sami had disappeared, but he vowed to find her.

Tuesday

Chelsea arrived at the hospital and asked Daniel if Kate was going to die. Daniel said he couldn't discuss it. Chelsea whined about wishing she could take back everything she said to her Granny Kate. Even though what happened between Kate and Daniel felt like a betrayal to Chelsea, Kate's life was bigger than her petty feelings. Chelsea said she knew Daniel never meant to hurt her and admitted what she felt for him was just a crush. Daniel swore he'd do everything he could to help Kate. Alone, Chelsea remembered Kate supporting her after her operation, realized she had to help her, and took off.

Lucas and Philip met with Kate, who decided it was time to have a serious talk about the future with her sons. Kate said she was taking time off because she had lung cancer, so she needed them to tend to Hearth and Home temporarily. Philip agreed to release Lucas from his contract at Titan, so he could run things for Kate. Lucas suggested Kate get a second opinion, but Kate didn't want to undergo more tests. She begged her sons to put their feelings against Daniel aside. Eventually, they both agreed. Kate said she was starting chemo today. Daniel arrived to give her a ride to the hospital. Lucas asked for a word alone with Daniel, while Philip vowed to be there for his mother. Lucas expressed his thoughts on Kate getting a second opinion. Daniel promised not to let his feelings for Kate interfere with his job. Lucas and Philip decided to accompany Kate to the hospital.

Bo and Hope arrived at the pub looking for Melanie. Hope went upstairs to fetch her, while Melanie dreamt about more notes appearing in her room. Hope knocked on the door and woke up Melanie. She asked her to get dressed and come downstairs. Alone, Melanie's phone rang and a threatening voice said he knew what happened in the cemetery. Melanie packed, vowing the Bradys weren't going to nail her for this. Downstairs, Max told Bo he thought Melanie may have been the one who killed Trent. Suddenly, Melanie appeared and tried to slip out the front door. Bo raced to stop her, noting Trent left a will and his attorney was on his way to Salem to read it. Mr. Berman, the lawyer, arrived and announced Trent left his estate to Melanie. Meanwhile, he left Max a box. Max wasn't interested, so Melanie took it to give to him later. After Bo left, Berman gave Melanie an envelope. Turned out he and Mel are pals. Bergman instructed Melanie to do the right thing and share the letter with the cops. Bo and Hope returned as Melanie hid the envelope in her purse. Bo asked if Melanie was at least going to tell them what was in the letter.

Abe, Lexie and Theo sat with Evan at the Java Café waiting for a photographer who was shooting them for a magazine article. Lexie wasn't sure she wanted to go through with it. She worried how Theo would react. She and Abe bickered about it. Abe insisted the article was important. In the middle of their spat, Theo ran off, picked up a cup of coffee, and threw it. A woman scolded him, then turned on Abe and Lexie for not keeping an eye on their autistic kid. Lexie flipped and grabbed Theo to leave. Abe asked her to wait, noting their son would be okay, since they were both committed to giving him the best life possible. They just had to stick together as a family. Evan interrupted, noting there was a technical glitch and the shoot would be delayed. Abe told Lexie to take Theo home. If she didn't want to bring Theo back, he'd understand. "We'll be back," said Lexie. "Family sticks together."

At the hospital Kate prepared for her treatment. Philip and Lucas wanted to stay, but Kate asked to be left alone. Soon, Chelsea arrived and handed Kate a medal Victor gave her when she was ill. She wanted to pass it onto Kate.

Wednesday

Bo confronted Melanie about the letter Trent's attorney gave her. Hope told Mel she had been set up — Berman was helping them. Bo noted this was their way of proving Mel wasn't cooperating with the cops. Bo opened the letter, then handed it to Hope. Mel wondered what it said. Bo and Hope instructed Mel not to leave town, but wouldn't tell her what was in Trent's letter. Mel announced she wasn't afraid of Bo and Hope. The letter obviously didn't say anything about her or she'd be in cuffs. Bo pressed Mel about what happened to Trent. Mel refused to be harassed and threatened to press charges. Hope gave her a card with a number to call. "You guys can go to hell!" spat Mel, storming off. Bo found another envelope on his desk. He and Hope read the note inside and decided to pay someone a visit.

Chloe asked Philip if he'd seen Lucas. Philip said they'd been at the hospital earlier and told Chloe about Kate's cancer and chemo. Philip admitted he was "scared to death." Chloe reassured him people beat cancer. Philip said he was glad Lucas had Chloe to talk to. Chloe promised to be there for Lucas and Philip. Mel interrupted, so Chloe left to find Lucas. Melanie accused Philip of trying to get her in trouble, but said it didn't work. She recounted her meeting with Bo and Hope and mentioned the letter. Mel thought the letter said who killed Trent. "So, let me get this straight — before he died, your father not only knew someone was out to get him, but he knew who it was?" asked Philip, insisting the only thing that would clear Mel was if someone stepped forward saying they killed Trent. Mel left, and Chloe returned. Mel listened as Chloe mentioned Kate's cancer and told Philip not to push her away. Chloe kissed Philip and left. Mel returned and said she was sorry about Philip's mother.

Nicole and a decorator were working on the baby's nursery when EJ interrupted. EJ thought Nicole was jumping the gun and suggested they talk about marriage, first. "You want to marry me?" asked a stunned Nicole. EJ burst her bubble, explaining it was either that or work out a custody arrangement. Nicole wondered if this was EJ's way of claiming ownership of their baby and heading into the Stefano school of fatherhood. She'd have to think about this. EJ was stunned, considering he was offering Nicole security, wealth, etc. Nicole admitted EJ was nothing like Stefano. Her baby was lucky to have him as a dad. The bell rang and it was Bo and Hope. They wanted to question Nicole. EJ stayed as her lawyer. Bo asked what really happened the night of Trent's murder and if Nicole was willing to sign a statement that her deposition was the truth. Bo wondered if Nicole had something else to say, like maybe she ran into Trent that night. Bo said he knew Nicole was lying and had proof.

Darrell caught Sami chatting on her cell phone. Sami said she was calling the clinic, because she had food poisoning. Then, she ran off to the bathroom. When she returned, Darrell said Sami couldn't leave the safe house. Sami was perturbed. Darrell said he'd see what he could do about her illness. Soon, a blindfolded doctor arrived to examine Sami. Alone with the doc, Sami asked if her baby was okay. The doctor assured that her child was fine. When Darrell returned, the doc told him Sami would need a good diet, regular exercise and medical care. While Darrell walked the blindfolded doc out to his car, Sami told her bun in the oven everything would be fine. Later, Sami asked Darrell for pickles. Darrell reminded Sami she had food poisoning and told her he was onto her act. Then, he announced he'd been reassigned to another case. On cue, there was a knock on the door — and in walked a large woman named Hilda. Darrell warned her Sami was a pain. Hilda warned Sami she was her "worst nightmare."

Thursday

Hilda told Sami the rules of her safe house, then watched TV and prepared a bratwurst and sauerkraut snack. When Sami announced it was time to take a shower, Hilda ordered her to keep the door open, so she could keep an eye on her. Soon, Hilda grabbed ear plugs and a blindfold and announced it was time for bed. Sami pointed out it was only 7 p.m. "Your safe house, my rules," snapped Hilda. The bell rang and Sami panicked. Hilda answered the door to find a trick-or-treater. Sami lamented not spending the twins' first Halloween with them. Hilda showed Sami pix of her kids and rambled on about them and her cheating husband. Meanwhile, Sami snuck into Hilda's bag and found sleeping pills. Soon, she handed Hilda a cup of laced tea. Before long Hilda was out like a light, and Sami was delighted, unaware her stalker lurked outside.

Nicole insisted she didn't kill Trent and had nothing to hide. Hope held up a bag containing torn up pieces of Nicole and Trent's marriage license. Finally, Nicole admitted to ripping it up and arguing with Trent, but said it didn't prove a thing. Nicole ordered Bo and Hope to leave. On cue, Bo pulled out another piece of evidence. EJ called the whole thing preposterous. Hope rattled off Nicole's prior attempts to kill Colin and Victor, while Bo read Trent's note: "If I happen to turn up dead or missing, you'll know that my dear wife has finally acted on all her threats." EJ said the note proved nothing. Hope asked if Nicole confronted Trent in the cemetery. Nicole swore she didn't. Bo pulled out a search warrant, and he and Hope searched the mansion. Hope discovered a beaded dress missing a bead. The cop couple emerged and told Nicole she was coming to the station. The missing dress bead was found in the cemetery. Nicole flashed back to the night of the murder. She ‘fessed up to arguing with Trent, but swore she didn't kill him. EJ told Nicole to keep quiet. Bo read her her rights and hauled her off.

Daniel checked on Kate, then left to make his rounds. Lucas stopped Daniel. "What were the odds on Kate beating lung cancer?" he asked. After some back and forth, Daniel admitted they weren't good and gave Lucas some books and articles to read about Kate's condition. Chloe arrived and assured Lucas that Kate would get through this. Then, Lucas went into Kate's room. Kate was upbeat. Lucas said she didn't have to prove how strong she was to him. He emerged and asked Chloe to go talk to Kate, since she was a cancer survivor. Chloe agreed, but Kate wasn't hospitable. Kate said her illness would be hardest on Lucas and suggested she and Chloe call a temporary truce, even though she didn't like Chloe and had not forgiven her for breaking Philip's heart. Chloe just wanted Kate to get better. "If you want to try to break up me and Lucas, well, that would be good motivation to get well, right?" noted Chloe. Daniel found a rattled Chloe and asked if she was okay. Chloe said she got "zapped back in time" and recounted her battle with leukemia. Daniel thanked her for opening up to Kate. Lucas returned and he and Chloe left. Daniel returned to Kate's side.

Abe thanked Lexie for coming back to the Java Café for their magazine feature. Lexie noted family stuck together. Mona Roy arrived to do the interview and said hi to Theo. Eventually, Theo gave her a big hug. Lexie, Abe and Mona discussed Theo's autism and what a special child he was. Mona began her interview with the Carvers. Abe stressed they were just an average family. Mona wanted to question Theo. Lexie said she could try, but warned he might not answer. He didn't. Finally, Mona thanked the Carvers for their time and left.

Friday

Stephanie visited Philip at the Kiriakis mansion and told him about her breakup with Max. Philip thought Max would be a fool to let her go. Steph cried and complained about Max always choosing Mel over her. Philip didn't think the problem was all Melanie. Steph thought Philip was taken with her. Philip reminded Steph that he was the one who turned Mel in to the cops. Steph still thought Philip was interested in her. Philip insisted he wasn't, although he found Mel "interesting" and "complicated." Steph didn't get it. Philip got a call from Victor and shared the news with Steph: Nicole had been arrested for Trent's murder. Steph was stunned.

Bo and Hope carted Nicole into the station. Nicole suggested Trent might have tried to frame her. Hope doubted it, and Bo warned she was going to jail. Nicole said EJ would never let the mother of his child be locked up with dangerous criminals. EJ arrived and admitted things didn't look good, considering Nicole's priors with Colin and Victor. Nicole said she hadn't killed either of them. Bo got off the phone and announced the charges against Caroline would be dropped. He left to tell her the good news. EJ asked Nicole to tell him the whole truth. She recounted following Trent to the cemetery, but swore he was alive when she left. EJ remained doubtful. Hope returned, and EJ insisted the pregnant Nicole couldn't go to jail. Then, he walked off with Hope and asked about Sami. Nicole overheard and went off about EJ caring more about Sami than her. EJ went off about Nicole needing to learn to accept Sami as part of his life. EJ vowed the child Nicole was carrying wouldn't be born in prison, but didn't know what would happen after that. EJ left, as Nicole cried she didn't kill Trent.

At the pub, Mel told Max about Bo and Hope setting her up and noted that she thought Trent's letter cleared her. Mel asked Max what was inside the box Trent left him. Max didn't care and said he wished he'd never met Trent. Mel noted if it weren't for Trent, they would have never met. Max said he was glad he found Mel, even though she'd put him through hell. Mel swore she never meant to hurt him. Mel talked about getting a job and saving for a place of her own. Nick overheard and offered for Mel to move in with him at Maggie's. Mel said she wanted to talk to Max before deciding. She assured Max there would be no hanky-panky between her and Nick. Max okayed the move. Bo arrived and announced he'd arrested Trent's killer: Nicole. Mel said she'd be filing a harassment suit against the cops. Then, she accepted Nick's offer to move in with him. Mel said goodbye to Max and said she was sorry about his breakup with Steph. Nick went to get the car. Alone, Mel picked up a knife and muttered she was "a lucky little girl."

Someone rattled the doorknob at the safe house, spooking Sami. She tried to wake Hilda, to no avail. The door opened as Sami hid behind the couch and cried. "Stand up," ordered the man. "Please don't kill me," begged Sami. The man identified himself as Rafe Fernandez, FBI. Rafe checked out Hilda, tried to wake her, and deduced she'd been drugged. He noticed the residue in the bottom of her cup. Rafe confronted Sami, who admitted she might have put some pills in Hilda's tea. Rafe scolded Sami. If he were the killer, she'd be dead. Hilda awakened and scolded Sami. Sami apologized. Hilda wasn't interested. "I quit," she snarled, grabbing her things and leaving. Rafe phoned command to tell them Hilda resigned and was stunned by their response. Then, he hung up and told Sami he was Hilda's replacement.
