What is with all of these mature women on soaps having to have all of this long hair. Do they think it actually makes them look younger?? On Y&R Nikki looked so much better and years younger when her hair was shorter...and don't get me started on AMC's Erica. My gosh the woman is over 60!! I am sure she must wear some kind of extensions, but even with that it is looking thinner and thinner on top. Some of the actresses actually go with the shorter look, but then instead of keeping it up, they just let it grow back again. They should all take a good long look at Jill's hair on Y&R. It is stylish and age appropriate and makes her look young and fresh. I would think that women in this occupation would be more aware of how they come across on screen. But this is JMO.

I don't think that Erica's hair is to long. I love her hair. And I don't see it thining on the top to the fact that she should cut it short or any thing. And my only gripe with Nicki's hair is the color. It looks yellow to me. She could go to a lite brown or a better shade of blonde. Just because your aging...there is no law or reason that says that you have to cute you hair or let it go gray. I actually like to see women keep their hair a decent length and upkeep the color. It show that they are interested in their apperance. I'm 42 and my hair is to the middle of my back and colored to keep the gray under control...and I don't have any intention of being the typical old lady with short gray hair anytime soon. Not to mention the fact that people are surprised when I tell them how old I am.

As I sit here, bemoaning a bad hair day, due to my attempt in having a shorter cut done, I know it's not the hairstyle, it's me. Everyone says I look great with this new haircut, but after years of seeing my reflection look totally different it'll take me a while to accept it. Knowing your hair looks better shorter, due to the advance of time, is rough, I keep telling myself at least I'm not going bald like my hubby.I do feel many women in show biz who continue to wear the same hairstyles they did years ago (Sally Fields, Goldie Hawn, Jane Seymour, Susan Lucci, etc are some) don't think it's any different than having botox or getting the ol' lips fluffed up, it's an attempt to look younger, or the same as before, in an industry that almost demands it. Luckily there are some with star power who've fought this logic, Meryl Streep, Glenn Close, Jane Fonda, have all gone with shorter do's which actually helped them look younger & more energetic then the old style did, we don't have to have the starched hair do's our Grandmothers did, it can look more natural & flattering. (hair color, best invention since sliced bread)I loved when M.Scott-Thomas had shorter hair, it worked very well for her, matter of fact that style is what I attempted for myself, just didn't have a stylist who knew how without making me look more like Chloe on Y+R. but it'll grow out & I can always muster up the nerve to make another attempt.Growing older graciously, IMHO, is much better than the phony looks many opt for, I shuddered everytime I saw Priscilla Presley's face on Dancing With The Stars, she was such a beautiful woman, no matter the age, until her ill attempt at looking younger made her look like she was wearing a wax mask, very unnatural & very unflattering. Part of the look younger ideology seems to include older women wearing hairstyles much more suited to someone 1/2 their age, guess like frozen faces & fat lips its something not likely to change, until the Men who run Hollywood have a makeover in the attitude deptartment.

Folks, while this thread is okay, let's remember to be respectful to our more mature actresses in posts. They've earned it.

Okay, I freely admit I have never been on top of fashion trends, but where is it written that mature woman have to have short hair? Isn't the shape of your face, the condition of your hair, etc, what makes or breaks a hairstyle? I know several older women with long, flowing, healthy grey hair who are beautiful. I know lots of younger woman with short hair who are beautiful. I never knew hairstyles had an age limit on them.

I am over 60 and had worn my hair short for so many years (long before it turned gray) that my family forgot what I looked like with it longer. I have been trying for some time now to grow it longer just once more. It is just reaching my shoulders and I'm going to let it keep growing. I am far from thinning on top, and I'm pretty sure that wearing it long is not the cause of thinning anyway. I was neither aware that long hair was not age-appropriate, nor do I really care. Whether my hair becomes a topic of negative conversation is of no consequence to me. I wear it to please myself, and nobody else. If I wanted to try to disguise my age, I'd dye it, but I LIKE it gray. I guess age gives you a certain independence.
