They did that on Days when Belle was first recast (with the girl who is now Maxie on GH). John and Marlena got married with young Belle as a bridesmaid, and when they returned from their honeymoon (and saw nu, teenage Belle) Marlena made some comment about "I swear she's gotten bigger in the week we've been gone." I remember finding it funny at the time, it was kind of a wink to the audience. It's much better than everyone suddenly refering to the character by full name. "Why hello Dani Andropolus, does everyone remember MY COUSIN, DANI ANDROPOLUS?"
