I was one of the last holdouts, the last remaining viewers that didn't want to see Sonny go away (jail, the island, anywhere) indefinitely mostly because I like MB so much. He's a very talented actor, but his talent & charm no longer rubs off on the character. As for the credibility factor, he has none. Either as a mob boss or a lover. I've been feeling that way for a while, but still saw possibility in the character. Today's episode blew it all. It was as if any emotional growth he'd gained over the years disappeared & his intellect with it. Never a brilliant guy to begin with, Sonny proved today that he is blatantly stupid. Diane warned him not to get involved with Claire & once he'd done it, she warned him not to mess around on her or hurt her. The irony is, despite her residual feelings for Sonny, there is still a good chance Brenda's will power is stronger than her love for him. It has been 8 years. Which leads to the next complaint. After seeing Dudley Dullard, the great Murphy Sinclaire, I can almost buy that Brenda would be excited to see Sonny again. He has a pulse. Any kind of personality is exciting after however long she was with that guy. But, once she was free of him & had spent a little time with Jason & probably reaquainted with other male friends, Sonny's pull wouldn't be that strong. She's not an impressionable, needy kid anymore.
Back to the stupidity level, earlier this same evening, Sonny told Claire he wanted to see where they could go. Then, five minutes with a reluctant Brenda & he dumps the woman who tanked her entire career & became the laughing stock of the entire law enforcement community for him & he actually believes that because he did it in a humane way, that she won't want payback. Hello? This is a woman who traumatized a 12 year old boy by trying to make him implicate his father on the witness stand & haranged a detective with a conflict of interest into dragging a barely adult kid with brain damage back from his family vacation home to ...testify against his father. Now, he'll be shocked that she wants revenge? This is the heart of the credibility factor. No real mob boss could be this stupid & not only function & last this long, but also be the bigtime boss the FBI is so passionate about putting in jail. It's got no believability at all which turns viewers away. He might as well be a house painter or a dog walker because he's not believable as the boss of a major mob family no matter how many times he blusters & rages or how many tvs he shoots & he's not believable as the irresistable lover no matter how many women are stupid enough to get into bed with him.
No. I've known it for a while. But, there has always been something there that made Sonny salvagable. Despite his bad choices with women, he's always had smarts when it came to trusting people. He's survived all these years as a viable leading man because he's been compelling. Smart, sexy & dangerous, but gentle & compassionate. That has steadily eroded. The whole dumping Claire 5 minutes after he promised to really work at their relationship is new. Not the dumping specifically, but the way he did, with no thought to the consequences of his actions. That it hasn't crossed his mind that she'll want payback. In the days when he was still interesting, that's the first thing he would think of. All of this for a woman who may want him, but she doesn't want to be with him. It's a sign of the bigger thing- the ruination of everything that made Sonny compelling. You can't expect the audience to keep being interested in him if you turn him into a caracature of a caracature. He's not a leading man if he becomes a bad joke. That's what's happened to Sonny. At his age, the batting of the pretty brown eyes & flashing of the dimples just looks pathetic. The only thing that is more pathetic is that the women still fall for it.

Love MB but Sonny has been ruined for a long time. It started after he was diagnosed he was going to become a better man. But he never changed. Can you even drink when on the Meds for manic depression? He still does, he still flips out and it's all about him. He says he cares about his "family" but lets face it he is only a parent when it is convenient for him, he puts his needs above all others because he is selfish and only truly cares about himself. Besides he has too many love's of his life, it was Carly for all the time Brenda has been gone, then Kate/Connie but now that Brenda is back well it's her. Both should disappear to the Island to never ever ever return.
