Anyone read this series? I've had lots of people tell me I should start, but I know nothing about it except that it's about vampires.

I know there are a LOT of Twilight fans (on this board, no less -- so don't kill me!), but I find the books pretty silly and shoddily written, not to mention I don't particularly like the message they send to teenage girls: That it's okay for some hot guy to stalk you all over the place and to give up your life to be with him.But I'm sure people will comment and tell you why they liked the books and you'll make your own informed decision.

~Giggles at Mala~ Do you KNOW my hubby? ~Snicker~I love Twilight. I just finished going through the Saga for a second time. The best way I could describe Twilight is that it's a vampire love story between a teenager (Bella) and vampire (Edward).

I hope you're not saying your husband 1)sparkles and 2)broke into your bedroom and watched you sleep. Because that's a little scary, LadyOphelia. LOL!

I really enjoyed the series and knew when I read them it really was about a teenager, so it was written as such. I tend to be more of a reader than an evening tv watcher, so I found it worth the read and I am looking forward to the movies coming out.

I became a fan of the entire series pre-Breaking Dawn (the fourth and final book told in Bella's perspective). I absolutely love these books. They provide such a wonderful escapism. I remember being only a few chapters into the first book when I knew I had to get my hands on both the second and third books immediately after. They're basically like crack - an addiction - and it's all because of the Edward and Bella love story. It's epic. Stephenie Meyer is a writer who really followed through and gave her fans a wonderful happy ending.

Many people say the same thing about soaps. I'm a fan of both, though. The Twilight series is also full of cheesy cheese as are soaps, but I eat this stuff up. I'm such a cheeseball. Anyway, Stephenie Meyer's books are certainly no masterpieces, but that's okay because that's not why I read them. I read them for the same reason why I watch soaps - strictly for entertainment purposes...as a way to escape.

There is no message. These are fiction/fantasy books. If teenage girls are reading them thinking they're going to find a message on how to lead their personal lives then they shouldn't be reading the books to begin with. I was watching telenovelas with my mom and my sisters as early as I can remember and American soaps by the age of 11. I certainly wasn't thinking, "Hmm, a little scheming

Thank you Mrs McAvoy! That's an awesome write up. I was addicted when I read Twilight in August. I finished the first three right after Breaking Dawn came out. My 14 year old got me hooked (shame on her...LOL) and now she's tired of me talking about it. Bella and Edward grab you and you can't shake it. It is a lot like a soap.

You can check Amazon's UK site. The book series (Twilight, New Moon, Ecplise and Breaking Dawn) is by Stephenie Meyer. The movie (Twilight) is due out November 21st in the states.

I'm reading Breaking Dawn right now, read the others in about a week, but then I needed a little breather from Bella & Edward. The books are good but you have to remember they are written for teenagers. I heard about them maybe a year ago and was interested but they are teenaged books and I am well over my teens. The books are good and I will probably see the movie too. BTW there really is a Forks, WA & a Quileute Reservation.

There are plenty of books out there aimed at young adults that are brilliantly written. I read more fiction for teens than anything else.

Does anybody know of any other books of this kind? My mom loved this series and I was looking for more books like this to buy her.

The Maximum Ride series by James Patterson is another young adult series. It's not about vampires, but about gentically "enhanced" children. Bird children. The last book out (The Final Warning) isn't as good as the first one, but they are good.

Anything in particular that you would recommend?

Sure!I just read Wicked Lovely and Ink Exchange by Melissa Marr, which operate under the assumption that the faerie world exists alongside our own. I enjoyed those quite a bit. There's Blood and Chocolate, by Annette Curtis Klaus, about the coming of age of Vivian, a werewolf. IGNORE the movie; it's utter garbage.I've heard great things about The Summoning by Kelley Armstrong. I'm still angling to get my hands on it. I love her books for adults. She's a fantastic supernatural/horror writer.Meg Cabot's Mediator and 1-800-MISSING books are fun.Their books are not supernatural at all, but I love Laurie Halse Anderson, Elizabeth Scott, and Sarah Dessen. Of course I can't say enough good things about the late Madeleine L'Engle, who is arguably one of the most effective and moving young adult authors of our time. The Time Quartet is a must-read, though I'm more of an Austin family gal myself. I better stop. I could recommend books all day. LOL.

You are absolutely right about Madeline L'Engle! She is an amazing writer and her books are captivating. I remember the first time I read one of her books - I couldn't put it down!

He waits a good 12-18 months before he brings out a new book for Women's Murder Club. OMG! I want my books now. Write faster. ~Snicker~

That is funny, I thought I was the only completely impatient reader around. besides a few soaps and Grey's I don't watch that much tv, so I read a lot. I have a sport addicted hubby and a 12 and 9 year old that love Japanese animation and I can hardly tolerate that. I will watch sports, but ususally while I am reading. hee hee hee I love Patterson as a writer as well

Better late than never: thank you very much, Mala! With midterms over I can finally put my nose into something other than my textbooks. I'm putting all of these recs onto my book list - thanks again!
