Young and Restless Recaps
Y&R Week of August 9, 2010
Monday
Nick came over to the penthouse to say good-bye to Summer before she went on a trip with Phyllis. She mentioned that Michael wouldn't be representing her in the divorce because he didn't want to choose sides.
Vance discussed strategy with Adam and Skye about his upcoming trial. Vance showed the front page of the newspaper's society section, which had Adam and Sharon's photo from the Gloworm opening. Vance thought it was a brilliant setup to prove that Adam and Sharon are still tight. Vance then asked if there was anything that he needed to know before the trial begins and Adam admitted that he confessed the baby switch to Sharon. Skye was not amused but Vance said he'll discredit Sharon on the stand. They were stunned when Adam insisted that Vance leave Sharon alone.
Paul and Chris discussed their kiss from the night before and both agreed that that their lives are too separate now to start up anything again. Heather, Ronan and Sid showed up and reported that Chance's union rep pled not guilty at his arraignment. Chris hoped he will be out of jail soon but Ronan worried that Chance will get in trouble as a dirty cop behind bars. Heather hoped to use another way to spring Chance and left with Ronan and Sid. Paul called Nina and was surprised by her chilly demeanor.
Heather asked Owen to drop the charges against Chance so it wouldn't hamper their investigation but the D.A. refused. Meanwhile, Chance was harassed by two inmates. Pretending that he was having withdrawals, Chance asked if they had drugs he could buy. One of the inmates was an army vet and said he would look into it. Ronan and Heather visited and announced that the warden would put Chance in isolated custody but he wouldn't take the offer.
Nick confronted Sharon with her picture in the newspaper and she admitted that she didn't have the strength to testify against Adam. Nick insisted she had to in order to send his brother to prison. Nick suggested that since Phyllis has left him, he and Sharon have a chance to be together again after Adam is behind bars. Sharon was miffed that Nick would expect her to come running back to him.
Chris and Paul visited Nina, who announced she saw them kissing outside of Gloworm. They explained that they got caught up in the emotion of remembering their wedding anniversary and the kiss just happened. Paul and Chris also assured that there is no future for them as a couple. Nina said she wanted to focus on Chance, then went to the jail to see her son. There, she begged Chance to let her post bail but he said he couldn't let that happen. Later, an inmate passed drugs to Chance.
The inmate reported back to Sid that Chance wanted to score drugs. Sid was satisfied that when Chance is killed, it'll just look like a dirty cop died.... Phyllis couldn't get over her hatred for Nic, Sharon and Victor.... While Nick was tending to a fussy Faith, Adam showed up at Sharon's door and urged her to tell the truth when she testifies.... Skye ordered Vance to attack Sharon on the stand.
Tuesday
Nick was peeved to find Sharon talking with Adam in the hallway. Adam quickly left and Sharon bristled at Nick's protectiveness. She accused her ex of treating her like she's stupid. Sharon then groused that she was mad at herself for letting her guard down around both Adam and Nick. Meanwhile, Adam reiterated to Vance not to attack Sharon on the witness stand.
Lily and Cane were thrilled to hear that the twins were bring released from the hospital. Malcolm and Devon were also present and happy too. While the new parents were getting instructions from a nurse, Mal called Neil with the news. He was excited and cut short his meeting with Sofia so he could be present for his grandchildren's homecoming. He didn't share this reason with Sofia who was miffed when Neil abruptly took off.
At the Abbott manse, Billy announced to his siblings that Victoria dumped him. Ashley was anxious about testifying at Adam's trial when Tucker suddenly arrived with Traci. Ashley was overjoyed to see her sister and Traci explained that Tucker sent his private jet to pick her up so she could lend moral support. Ash was touched by Tucker's gesture and she told him that she would see him later. After he left, Abby showed up and shared a rare tender moment with her mother. Ash confided in Traci that she was glad Tucker wouldn't be in the courtroom to hear the details of her mental history.
Nikki was perturbed when Meggie headed to Fenmore's for another shopping spree. Nikki told Victor that she didn't like their guest spending his money so freely. Meggie returned, loaded down with shopping bags, and Victor departed. Nikki wondered out loud if Meggie really is in danger; Meggie insisted that Shaw is after her. Later, Nikki found a note from Meggie that read: "Sorry I intruded on your lives. I never meant to upset anyone. Good-bye." Nikki called Meggie's cell and asked where she's going. Meggie said she was at Crimson Lights, trying to figure that out. Nikki ordered Meggie to stay put and headed over to the coffeehouse.
Cane, Lily, Malcolm and Devon brought the babies home. As everyone cooed at the twins, Grandpa Neil showed up and rhapsodized about when Lily was first placed in his arms. Sofia came next and thanked Malcolm for his phone call, or else she never would've known about the twins coming home. Tucker showed up with gifts and that's when Neil found out for the first time about the business Tucker was conducting in Australia that would keep Cane from being deported. Neil asked why Sofia never told him this and she said she would've if he hadn't dashed out of their meeting. Neil and Malcolm started to argue and Cane asked them to not mar such a happy day. Neil then expressed his gratitude to Sofia for helping Cane.
At the courthouse, Sharon assured a nervous Ashley that they have the truth on their side. The trial began and Owen and Vance made their opening arguments. Sharon was called to the stand and she testified how she and Adam eloped and that he later confessed to the baby switch. Ashley got more tense and left the courtroom to get some air. Outside, she was surprised when Tucker showed up. When Owen was done with Sharon, Vance was invited to cross examine. He urged Adam to let him do his job but Adam refused.
At Crimson Lights, Meggie was on the patio when she was grabbed by a menacing Shaw. Nikki arrived and smashed a glass vase on Shaw's head. He crumpled to the ground and Nikki screamed for someone to call 911. The police arrived and took Shaw away. Nikki apologized to Meggie and said they were going back to the ranch.
Wednesday
In court, per Adam's instructions and despite Skye's objections, Vance didn't cross examine Sharon. The judge asked Sharon to step down. Victor was surprised by the move but Nick explained that Adam was trying to ingratiate himself with Sharon. Victor praised Sharon for telling the truth.
Ashley urged Tucker to leave but he insisted on being present to support her. Ash was called to the stand and recounted the terrible things Adam did to make her go crazy. She recounted the night she lost her baby when Adam pretended to be the dead Sabrina. When it was Vance's turn he brought up Ashley's history of mental instability, multiple stays in psychiatric institutions, believing that a blanket was her dead baby Robert, a hysterical pregnancy and thinking she killed Nikki. Ashley got upset when Vance accused her of making Adam her scapegoat. She broke down in tears and
insisted she was telling the truth. When Vance was done with his
questioning, a rattled Ashley stepped down and a recess was called. After being comforted by her family, Ashley left the courthouse to get some air.
Jill pressured Tucker to contact his P.I. so more information on her birth family could be uncovered. Tucker called his person and informed him that Jill will be contacting him soon and to do whatever she needs. Ashley showed up and after offering Ash words of support, Jill departed. Concerned about how her testimony would reflect on Jabot, Ashley offered to step down as CEO. Tucker turned her down flat. "I'm more impressed with you now because you're able to overcome such tremendous obstacles," he praised, which greatly touched Ashley. They cuddled and kissed.
As each witness testified, Vance brought up their questionable pasts (Abby's public exhibitionism, Jack conspiring with Adam to forge Victor's diary, Victor's retribution because Adam wouldn't bend to his father's will and Nick's jealousy over Adam's relationship with Sharon). When it was time for closing arguments, Owen declared, "Despite Mr. Abram's attempts to divert justice, the case against Adam Newman is solid." Vance countered with, "Justice won't be served by putting Adam Newman on trial. This case is a travesty." The judge said she would issue her decision in a
few days and court was adjourned.
Jill admitted to Victoria that Billy fired his own mother from Restless Style because she was the one who blabbed about the antique gun to Tucker. Jill asked Victoria not to blame Billy for "my sin." Victoria went over to Billy's office but he was at Adam's hearing so she decided to wait for him. When he finally returned from the courthouse, Victoria announced that they had "unfinished business" and revealed that Jill had confessed about giving Tucker the insider information. Victoria apologized but Billy was miffed she didn't believe that he would never hurt her.
Surprised that Adam's lawyer didn't attack Sharon on the stand, Nick asked Sharon if she promised anything to Adam. Sharon was insulted by the insinuation that she may have given Adam false hope about a future together so he would order his lawyer to go easy on her.... The Abbott family returned home and became worried when they couldn't find Ashley. Abby said she had never heard her mother talk about Robert before. "I just wish there was something I could do to make her feel better," Abby sighed.... Jill called Tucker's contact about investigating her biological parents.... Nick fretted to Victor and Jack about the possibility that Adam could get off.... In Skye's presence, Sharon thanked Adam for keeping his word.
Thursday
As she leaned on Paul, Nina fretted over Chance's safety behind bars and
remembered that it is her other son's birthday. Paul said he was still
investigating a lead that may help them find him.
Chris wished Ronan happy birthday. "I hate birthdays," he huffed, as Heather
showed up. He complained about Chance for getting into his predicament and
Heather once again suggested that Chance be told the truth but Ronan
maintained it would jeopardize the investigation.
Chance was surprised when Chloe visited him in jail. She urged him to tell
the truth and get released but he insisted he is a drug addict, which she
refused to believe. Chance finally confessed that he was working undercover,
which frightened Chloe. He wanted to pass a packet of drugs he scored to
Chloe for safekeeping so that it can be used for evidence later but she
turned him down.
Malcolm and Sofia argued over where to live. She wanted a luxury condo in
the city, he wanted a house in the 'burbs. Thoroughly frustrated, Sofia
headed to the club's dining room, where she encountered Neil and Tucker
discussing Victor's alleged bribe to a Japanese official. Neil was surprised
to learn that Tucker planned to take Beauty of Nature away from Victor. "Be
prepared for all-out war," Neil warned. Sofia pointed out that Neil's past
working relationship with Victor will come in handy but Neil refused to help
out.
Victor ordered Michael to arrange a meeting with the Department of Justice
in order to deal with Tucker's accusation head on. Victor was surprised
to see Nikki and Meggie walk in, acting chummy. Nikki explained that Meggie was
attacked and Shaw was arrested. Nikki saved her life, Meggie added. She wanted to get a job and pay back the
Newmans' generosity but Victor pointed out that Shaw's cohorts may still be
looking for her. Meggie offered to do housework around the ranch, but after giving it some thought, Nikki asked Meggie to be her assistant instead. Meggie happily accepted
and Nikki was later impressed when
her new hire handled her new duties efficiently.
At the G.C.A.C., Victor and Michael met with a rep from the Department of
Justice (which Tucker and Neil observed from a nearby table) so Victor
could explain that the antique gun given to a Japanese official was a gift and
not a bribe. "I will assume responsibility however you see fit," Vic
offered.
Two inmates rigged the light fixture in Chance's cell so that it would cause
an explosion when he touched it.... Chloe told Ronan that Chance asked her
to sneak out drugs. He told her to go back and retrieve them for Chance's
sake... Heather visited Chance and he passed the drugs to her. Chance was
taken back to his cell.... Heather encountered Chloe in the visiting room.
As they snarked at each other, there was an explosion. When Chance
emerged unscathed, Heather ran into his arms; a peeved Chloe took off....
Chris told Nina and Paul that the feds authorized Chance's release. Chris
also shared that there was an explosion on his cellblock. They were relieved
when Chance showed up with Heather. When Chance called a still stewing Chloe and asked to meet,
she told him to come to Jimmy's. He said he couldn't leave his mom since
it's his lost brother's birthday. Chloe hung up and was joined by Ronan.
When he took out his wallet to pay for a drink, Chloe noticed his driver's
license. "It's your birthday," she observed.... Tucker warned Victor that
he's coming after Beauty of Nature.... Chris brought out cupcakes to
celebrate Nina’s missing son's birthday.... Chance told Heather that the drugs
he scored in jail were from the police evidence locker. He wanted to post a
hidden video camera in the evidence room and Heather suggested they go by
the book and get Owen's help on this.... Meeks reported to Owen that Chance
was released before the explosion. Owen ordered Meeks to make sure his men
gets the job done right next time!
Friday
As everyone waited for the judge's decision on whether or not Adam will go to trial, Victor recalled to Nikki first holding his son as a baby and his high hopes for Adam's future. Vic also remembered how Hope decided to raise Adam on her farm in Kansas without him knowing who his father is. Victor then flashbacked to a couple of years ago, when Hope was dying of cancer and apologized for keeping father and son apart. Her dying wish was for them to be reunited and get to know each other.
After more memories of Adam's misdeeds since coming to Genoa City, Victor got a call that the court was reconvening. Everyone returned to the courtroom and anxiously awaited for the judge to share her decision. Judge Anderson explained, "My task was to decide whether there is sufficient evidence to hold Adam Newman over for trial on a litany of charges; criminal conspiracy, fraud, kidnapping, an accessory to the murder of Richard Hightower. There were issues with both counsel and witnesses which taint the case against the defendant... Because the law required that much of the state's evidence be excluded, this case hinged on witness testimony."
The courtroom was completely silent as the judge continued. "It was claimed that Adam Newman waged a campaign of terror against Ashley Abbott as a means of revenge against her husband Victor Newman," Judge Anderson noted. "Ms. Abbott's psychological state at the time of the alleged assaults casts doubt on her story. The witness has a long history of mental instability. Her uncorroborated testimony and retrieved memories only served to underscore the court's questions about their veracity. Victor Newman testified about an ungrateful son who committed fraud and betrayed his family. However, many of his statements were unsubstantiated, and the court believes that Mr. Newman's testimony was shaded by his own bitter disappointment as a father.... Jack Abbott's concerns are tainted by strong and persistent
rumors of his own complicity with Adam in the creation of a forged diary. Finally, Nicholas Newman testified that both he and his sister Victoria shared their father's harsh assessment of Adam, but the court again can't help wondering whether Adam wasn't more a threat to their shares of the Newman empire than to the family itself... Sharon Newman's testimony about Adam's alleged confession might have carried great weight in my decision, but without corroborating evidence, the court must consider the possibility that her decision to come forward and testify for the prosecution might suggest acrimony over a marriage that was ultimately annulled."
The judge then announced, "The entire case against Adam Newman is dismissed without prejudice." Everyone in the courtroom was shocked and angry. Jack blamed Owen's incompetence for letting Adam walk. "I did the best that I could," Owen countered. "Having a bunch of vengeful witnesses didn't help." Victor told everyone to come back to the ranch.
Adam was thrilled, until he was approached by Richard Hightower's son, Justin. "Why'd you kill my dad?" the boy charged. "What'd he ever do to you?" .... Nick expressed his appreciation to Sharon for testifying but she lamented that it wasn't enough.... Victor assured Justin's aunt that he will take care of the boy.... Ashley vented her frustration to Victor that she had to relive the most painful moments of her life for nothing.... Adam invited his detractors to say whatever they wanted to him but one by one,
they walked away from him in silence.
At the ranch, Victor urged everyone to get on with their lives and not focus on vengeance for Adam. "Ignore him as if he never existed," Vic advised. "The crimes he committed against all of us will weigh so heavily on his shoulders, he will carry those sins for the rest of his life. He will never be a free man." Meanwhile, Adam told Skye they needed to reconsider their situation but she insisted that they stay married. "We have an arrangement," she curtly reminded. "Your name, my money, and you're not backing out of that." Adam then remembered when he finished grad school and said good-bye to his mother before moving to New York City. " I know you will make me very, very proud," Hope assured back then, which now filled Adam with guilt.
