A Thanksgiving Culinary Tale— By Stella Bednarz My sister, Kathy, is a whiz in the kitchen. Me, not so much. But when Noelle Beck (Lily, ATWT) sent us her Corn Casserole recipe for the 12/2 issue, it sounded yummy and looked goof-proof, so I decided to prepare it for Thanksgiving. The night before, my mother asked, "Are you sure you want to bring something you've never made before?" Good question, but I'd already committed myself. On Thanksgiving morning (my birthday, no less!), I forged ahead. The directions were easy, although I somehow forgot to put the ingredients in a bowl to mix them first. Instead I put them directly into the casserole dish and mixed there. Panic ensued when I realized my error, but I pressed on. One hour later, the corn casserole emerged from the oven. It looked good, but how would it taste, given my mistake? Thanksgiving dinner was at my sister's in-laws and there was going to be quite a crowd. When I arrived, I saw two other vegetable casseroles on the buffet table. Oh, no — COMPETITION!!! I hadn't counted on that. As my humble corn casserole was being reheated, I fretted it might dry out AND everyone might pass it by because it looked plainer than the others. Finally, it was time to eat. Initally, it didn't seem like people were taking much interest, but as the first people in line sat down to eat, I started hearing comments like, "Have you tried the corn casserole? It's good." Now I could relax and enjoy the meal. Kathy's father-in-law even declared that it was "Killer!" right after he got himself a second helping. Some guests were even complaining there wasn't enough, so I went into the kitchen to check and lo and behold, my casserole dish was empty. Yea! For a brief, shining moment, I felt like a Top Chef. So thanks to Noelle Beck for her wonderfully delicious (and easy!) Corn Casserole. A true crowd pleaser for young and old alike. Believe me, if I can make it, anyone can.
