James Mitchell: In Memoriam

— By Michael Karol

AMC lost one of its greatest talents on Janaury 22 when James Mitchell passed away at the age of 89. It's clear from the comments the actor made about his castmates over the years that he adored them as much as they loved him.

— ABC

Palmer adored Daisy (Gillian Spencer, top l.), whose mother, Myra (Elizabeth Lawrence) was his housekeeper. "We miss her very much," said Mitchell of the late Lawrence. He beamed of Spencer, "She's one of the dearest people in my life."

— ABC

Palmer went to great lengths to keep daughter Nina (Taylor Miller) apart from Cliff (Peter Bergman). He called Bergman "one of my best friends" and said of Miller, "Dear Taylor and I are still very good friends."

— ABC

Palmer had a troubled marriage to Donna (Candice Earley). He said that Earley "taught me a lot."

— ABC

Palmer often went up against his childhood enemy, Adam Chandler (David Canary). Mitchell called Canary "an amazing man."

— ABC

Palmer enjoyed meddling in niece Dixie's (Cady McClain) affairs. He described McClain as "very interesting, very independent" and "movie-star gorgeous."

— ABC

Palmer had a frequently strained relationship with Dixie's love, Tad (Michael E. Knight). Mitchell described Knight as "so funny, so caring."

— ABC

Palmer married Kate Collins's Natalie in 1989 (also pictured: Robert Gentry as Ross and Kathleen Noone as Ellen). "I loved her," he said simply of Collins.

— ABC

Mitchell kicked back on-set in 2002 with Jennifer Bassey (ex-Marian) and Canary.

A great soap actor, and such a dancer! And a man of conviction; I loved that he insisted the writers change an arc in which Palmer was opposed to Kevin being gay.

Palmer will surely be missed. I hope they give him a proper exit and have all of Pine Valley there.. He will be missed just like Mona,Phoebe, and Myrtle. My the all rest in peace. I enjoyed all of them.
