Maria (Eva La Rue) and Edmund's (John Callahan) dream of starting a family came true in 1996 when they adopted Sam from teenage mom Kelsey. The Greys were heartbroken when Kelsey changed her mind and took back the baby. But they rejoiced when Kelsey returned him after realizing he would be better off in the couple's tender care.

In 1997, Maria and Edmund's family expanded with the birth of baby Maddie. But Erica (Susan Lucci) kidnapped the girl and passed her off as her own, letting Maria and Edmund believe their newborn had died. Ultimately, Erica came clean and brought Maddie back to her birth parents.

Liza (Marcy Walker) wanted to become a mom so badly, she asked Jake to donate his sperm. He agreed, but Adam (David Canary) had other plans; he swapped the sample behind Liza's back so he would be the baby's papa. Liza welcomed Colby in 1999; she did not welcome the truth about Adam's machinations when truth was revealed later that year.

Hayley (Kelly Ripa) and Mateo (Mark Consuelos) were thrilled when little Lorenzo (nicknamed Enzo) made his debut in 2001. Alas, the tot suffered liver problems and required a transplant. Tim Dillon stepped up and offered part of his organ, and the baby thrived.
