Alexandra and Edmund (John Callahan); Anna and David (Vincent Irizarry)
— Lorenzo Bevilaqua/ABC; Steve Fenn/ABC

Two Heads Are Better Than One

Finola Hughes (Alexandra/Anna): AMC scored a coup in 1999 when it lured GENERAL HOSPITAL alum Hughes, who had made the role of Anna famous in Port Charles territory, to the contract role of Alexandra, who turned out to be Anna's twin sis. Although Anna had been presumed dead since 1992, in 2001 she turned up on AMC very much alive. Hughes played both roles for several months until Alex left the canvas with hubby Dimitri; as Anna, she stuck around until 2003.

Kitty and Linc (Peter White); Kelly and Linc
— ABC

Francesca James (Kitty/Kelly): James became an AMC legend as beloved heroine Kitty, a role she played from 1972-77. Kitty was killed off when James exited, but in 1978, she was brought back as Kitty's twin, Kelly (anyone else seeing a pattern here?). Kelly was a drug addict, but she cleaned up her act and ended up walking down the aisle with Kitty's widower, Linc; they remain married to this day.

Dixie (Cady McClain) saving Tad ... from Ted
— Kimberly Butler/ABC; Frank Micelotta/ABC

Michael E. Knight (Tad/Ted): Knight wisecracked his way into the hearts of AMC fans when he took over the part of Tad in 1983. When he left in 1990, those same fans were crushed — so when he returned in 1992, they were willing to go along for a ride that was byzantine even by daytime standards — by which we mean, the plot that explained where Tad had been over that two-year period. An amnesiac Tad had wended his way to Napa Valley, much to the delight of Nola Orsini (who ran the Orsini Vineyards) because Tad was a dead ringer for her own deceased son, Ted. “Ted” came to Pine Valley on business, a trip that ultimately led him to recover his memory and his true identity as Tad. But the following year, the not-so-dead and not-so-nice Ted arrived on the scene and Ted fell hard for Tad's gal, Dixie. He nearly succeeded in killing Tad to ensure that Tad couldn't stand in the way of his quest for Dixie's heart.

Cindy and Stuart
— ABC

Ellen Wheeler (Cindy/Karen): Viewers — and Stuart — fell hard for sweet Cindy when she came to town in 1987 — and mourned when she died of AIDS just a few years later. AMC kept the actress aboard by creating the role of Cindy's brash twin, Karen. Karen didn't last long (and apparently never appeared before an ABC photographer!), leaving town in 1989, but she did make her mark on the show by kidnapping then-newborn Adam Chandler, Jr. (JR) and demanding a million dollars for her return. Tad safely recovered the boy.
