Break a Leg

— By Deanna Barnert

Summer came to a grinding halt for B&B's Darlene Conley (Sally) when she broke her leg while in a coffee shop last August, but that damn wheelchair is finally gone...for the most part.

"I'm walking with the cane and all of the regular physical therapy exercises are behind me," cheers Conley. "Some of the bones got misplaced when I fell. There are two of them that have to come together and they're [almost there] now. I do bed exercises to stretch it, but the therapy now is just walking. And walking. And walking. I still take the wheelchair with me onset, because there are cables all over the floor and you can get tripped easy."

And Conley is not going to make that mistake twice. In fact, her coffee shop fiasco taught her some major life lessons. "It was totally a learning experience," she agrees. "I got hurt because I was in too much of a hurry to take care. It wasn't even an automobile accident. I got impatient, so I decided to move a chair and go sit somewhere else and bam, I fell over and landed right on the big bone, the femur. My New Year's resolution is to never do that again. I now take forever [to do anything]!"

If she ever forgets her resolution, all she needs is a rainy day to remind her. "I have one of those funny legs now," Conley shares. "I wake up and I know when it's going to rain!"

Beyond proceeding with caution and reporting the weather, the broken leg gave Conley a much more basic lesson: How to ask for help! "We're so used to taking care of ourselves," Conley sighs. "I was like, 'I'm so sorry to ask. I want to just get up and get it myself.' That's part of my therapy: You can't get up and get it yourself. If there's something in the way, you have to wait until someone's there and then you can get up and get it."

But not for long: Conley's already crossing her legs like a lady again and if all goes well, she'll be doing the jig by St. Patrick's Day!
