GUIDING LIGHT Interviews

Robert Newman

Robert Newman: Chatter Box

If you wrote a book about Josh Lewis, what would be the most important moment in his life?
Jody
That's a hard one, because there are a lot of moments in Josh's life I want to forget about (laughs). The easy answer would be to say, "The day he met Reva Shayne," but it's probably the death of his father. He looked to his dad for guidance, and he looks to his brother for support and for things not to do.

You and your character are so intertwined in the minds of soap fans. Do you enjoy that or would you rather we distinguish between the two more?
Anita F., Neenah, Wis.
I guess [some people] think that I'm Josh, but that's changed more over the years. I have fewer people coming up to me on the street and saying, "You're Josh Lewis," and more people coming up to me and saying, "You're Robert Newman." Slowly but surely people realize that there's a difference between Josh and Robert. I'm glad that I play a character that the fans like, because people are always really great to me. They're friendly and very respectful, and my bottom line is: If I didn't have fans to deal with on the street then I'd pretty much be out of business.

I enjoyed your performance in Nine this past summer. Do you have plans for more theater productions in the future?
Barb Clancy, Hope Mills, N.C.
From there I went to the Civic Light Opera [in Pittsburgh] and did A Little Night Music. [Executive producer] Ellen Wheeler and I have discussed this at length, and what I really want is — at least once a year — to take two to six weeks off to do something, probably musicals. It's very important to me. My first several years on GUIDING LIGHT I always was in a show at least once a year. Then my kids were born and growing, and that was set aside as they went through their earliest years because I didn't want to take time away from them. But now they're teenagers and they've got their own lives, and for me to step away for two or three weeks is not a big deal.
