GUIDING LIGHT Interviews
Robert Newman on Triangles— By Heather Filemyr Robert Newman (Josh) is well aware that his current storyline has created an uproar among GUIDING LIGHT viewers. "I know the fans are freaked out right now," he acknowledges. "I'm getting e-mails and I know [from] the (Web) posts I read that it's just crazy." But that hasn't dampened Newman's enthusiasm. "To me, as an actor playing a role, I think it's really quite extraordinary," he explains of the latest setback for Josh and Reva. "Josh and Reva have this mythical, ordained-to-be-together-by the-stars quality that the fans are very drawn to, but what we're seeing now is that they can't work it out. It's interesting to be in the middle of it because, as Robert, I almost feel the pressure from the fans that I've got to keep this relationship together — which Josh and Reva may feel, too. They are supposed to stay together because everyone around them believes they are supposed to be together. But there's something that's just not working." The rift between the troubled pair widened to a chasm with one knock-out blow. "The turning point for me was when she said to him, 'You're not enough for me, and you will never be enough for me,' " he reveals. "That totally rocked his world. And, in a way, she can never give him what he needs, because what he needs is to be enough." Newman insists that while Olivia has played a role in Josh and Reva's continued estrangement, "this is different than being split apart by a third person or some crazy scheme or circumstance. This is a totally different ball game now," he asserts. "In his mind, they will never be able to fulfill each other, so now what? This thing he's got going with Olivia, it just feels good to have a beautiful woman who is being flirtatious with him. I don't think he's blind to her schemes. He knows Olivia quite well, and they've allowed me to play all of these moments where Josh is completely aware of what she's doing, but he likes her anyway. She's become a good companion to him." But what about his wife? "With Reva, I think he's beating his head against the wall," sighs Newman. "When do you finally say 'enough?' "
