GUIDING LIGHT Timeline

Phillip (Grant Aleksander) and Beth (Beth Chamberlin)
— CBS

Murder Most Foul

6) Gary and Neil teamed up to cause an explosion at the opening of Blakewood Towers in 1990. Moments before the explosion, Neil and Phillip (Grant Aleksander) got into a fight, and the last word Neil uttered before he died was "Phillip." Phillip was arrested, but faked his death in hopes of discovering the true killer. After months on the run, Phillip discovered that Gary set up Neil to die that night. Around the same time, others started to suspect the same thing. Roger and Mallet got a confession out of Gary, who was sent to jail. Phillip revealed that he wasn't dead, but he, Beth (Beth Chamberlin) and Rick got community service for faking his death.

Samantha (Suzy Cote) and Daniel St. John (David Bishins)
— Craig Blankenhorn

7) When Daniel St. John (David Bishins) won Holly's heart in 1991, Roger dug around in his past and learned from Jean Weatherill that Daniel had killed his wife and her sister. Jean came to Springfield, but was soon found dead in the Country Club pool. Most people believed Roger had done the deed, but Samantha (Suzy Cote) was convinced it was St. John. (Her pleas were ignored because the police thought it was revenge for her unrequited crush on the doctor.) Harley listened to her pal and continued investigating. The following year, Harley found the murder weapon — Daniel's nameplate. Daniel's capture culminated at the Bauer cabin (where he had taken a kidnapped Holly), while Harley was locked in a root cellar. Mallet rescued Harley (and they shared their first kiss), and Roger fatally shot Daniel to save Holly.

Lillian (Tina Sloan), Beth (Beth Chamberlin) and Lizzie (then-Hayden Panettiere)
— Lorenzo Bevilaqua/PGP

8) Beth's (Beth Chamberlin) abusive boyfriend, Carl, came to Springfield, which didn't please her family. At the Spaulding mansion, Carl was shot dead in 1998. Beth and her loved ones, including mom Lillian (Tina Sloan), were on the suspect list. It looked like Beth was going to be thrown in jail for the crime, but in reality, she was covering for the real killer. Turns out Lizzie (then-Hayden Panettiere) had accidentally shot Carl when he was arguing with her mother.

Pilar (Paula Garces) and Carmen (Saundra Santiago)
— Lorenzo Bevilaqua/PGP

9) Many people wanted sleazy Ben Warren dead, and in 1999, someone actually pulled the trigger. Carmen (Saundra Santiago), who had shot Ben for having a supposed romantic attraction to her daughter, framed Michelle, so the Bauer girl was put on trial. On the witness stand, Pilar (Paula Garces) admitted that Carmen had shot Ben, but her delusional behavior forced the jury to discount her testimony. Michelle was found guilty, but with the help of her friends, she went on the run. At the the same time, Vanessa awoke from her coma (Carmen had been poisoning her lip balm) and revealed that Ben was alive when Carmen left. He had grabbed Vanessa, and the gun went off, fatally shooting him. Michelle was set free.

Catalina (Jessica Jimenez)
— Walter Thompson/PGP

10) Catalina (Jessica Jimenez) had tricked Tony into marrying her. In 2002, he found out about her lies and when he went to confront her, she was dead. An unconscious Marah lay by her body, so Tony tried to take the rap for the murder in hopes of sparing Marah. But neither Marah nor Tony did the deed: It was former friend Romeo, who was acting upon orders from Abuela Maria.
