In MemoriamJames E. Reilly Remembered
The October 12 passing of former DAYS OF OUR LIVES and PASSIONS head writer James E. Reilly has stunned the industry. His longtime friend and agent Jonathan Russo, who confirmed Reilly's death to Soap Opera Weekly, shared, "We spoke an hour or two hours a day for almost 15-20 years. We did the math — 27 years. He was a towering figure in the industry. He deserved my time and attention. He wanted it and we were friends. We liked to catch up." "He never ran out of thoughts or ideas. He never repeated himself unless it was intentional so he didn’t lose viewers. He never had other people submit story ideas ever. He sat down and laid out and presented stories and layouts for two shows. This is an amazing accomplishment," Russo continued.
Ken Corday (Executive Producer, DAYS): "The DAYS OF OUR LIVES family is deeply saddened by the recent passing of James E. Reilly. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. Jim was not only an ingenious storyteller who changed the landscape of daytime drama, but he celebrated life with passion, humor and an appreciation for the best it has to offer. He was an inspiration for us all...and will be greatly missed."
Lisa de Cazotte (executive producer GH:NIGHT SHIFT, former EP PASSIONS): "Jim Reilly was not only a legend in our industry, but he was a great friend and mentor. His creativity, sense of humor and genius will be sorely missed. There will never be another like him and I am deeply grateful for the years we spent working together on PASSIONS and for the joy he brought to my life."
Deidre Hall (Marlena, DAYS): "Jim Reilly was a powerful presence who brought forth brilliant and creative ideas. The passion and depth with which he wrote the Possession story, and the Salem Stalker, made him not only a fan favorite, but my champion as well. I respected the man and his work, and I am deeply saddened they are gone from us."
Galen Gering (Rafael, DAYS; ex-Luis, PASSIONS): "Although I never got to know the man well, I do owe him for creating a show that was an incredible rollercoaster ride, spanning nearly a decade of creative storytelling the likes of which daytime had never seen. It’s a terrible loss of a creative force that in large part changed the face of traditional soap operas forever."
Eric Martsolf (Brady, DAYS; ex-Ethan, PASSIONS): "To me he was the writer who wasn’t afraid to travel the road less traveled. He was an innovator in the soap genre, and composed characters and storylines that broke down traditional barriers and walls."
Eva Tamargo (ex-Pilar, PASSIONS): "Even though I never got to meet him, I was blessed to speak his beautiful, inspirational and faithful words as Pilar for nine years. Jim will never know how much he helped me get through some rough personal times while I was playing Pilar. Well, perhaps, now in Heaven, he will know. My prayers are with his family at this most difficult time. Que en Paz, descanses, Jim."
McKenzie Westmore (ex-Sheridan, PASSIONS): "We have truly lost a great man who contributed to daytime is so many amazing ways. I was so blessed and honored to be a part of one of his creations and portray a character he created. He will be missed and all my thoughts and prayers are with his family."

James E Reilly was truly an amazing man! I have no doubts in my mind that Mr. Reilly didn't save Days from a possible cancellation back in the 90's. James brought his creativity to Salem and fans went nuts! They were screaming and begging for more of James E. Reilly. We've lost a legend... Mr. Reilly inspired me to become a writer and he was the one who got me hooked on soaps. I'm forever grateful for James' talent that he brought to Daytime. He will never be forgotten, he will forever be missed. Rest in peace, James~ Rakesh
I forgot to add something - SOD/SOW, thank you so much for doing this feature. I really appreciate it. :)
Jim Reilly was a real inspiration to me as a writer. I always looked up to him, and I even had hopes of writing Passions myself one day! RIP, JER.
Jim Reilly was such a great man, with great ideas, and to be able to use his abilities as well as he did.. it just made him a Legend .. we will miss him dearly. His talent is something others can aspire to and hope someday to match. Rest In Peace..and thanks for the Memories! Joanie
They just don't make them like they used to! Douglas Marland, William J. Bell. James Reilly! Although I was not a regular viewer of either DOOL or Passions, I was, however, familiar with the work of this daytime giant. my prayers are with his family.
I started watching Passions purely by accident, thinking it was not my cup of tea, granted I was in my mid 40's and had watched tradition soaps. At the time, I was watching no soaps, as they were all the same; depressing and sad! Passions was like a breath of fresh air! I started watching and could not turn it off. Mr. Reilly's creation of Passions was nothing short of genius! Too bad others could not see this. Viewers choosing to stick to the ordinary soaps with the same old soap story line of yesterday do not know what they were missing. Being a true die-hard Passions fan I always thought Passions would return in some form in the future, but with the passing of Mr. Reilly, I guess that is not possible now. This Passions fan will truly miss Mr. Reilly. My condolence to his family.
JER had inspired me as a writer of being less traditional and take risks, just so people can talk about the writing good and bad. My prayers goes out to his family and friends.
I just read a posting & am truly saddened little lone shocked. I loved Passions uniqueness from the very 1st episode. To think just the other day i was thinking how wonderful a Passions movie could have been written by his own self. My sympathies go out to all of his family. I shall forever cherish Passions memories!
Wow I am shocked to hear of James E Reilly's death. I was a fan of Days since the early 80s and I enjoyed his work on the show. I know through the past several years he has had some challenges, but I think he did the best he could. He enjoyed doing what he did and put forth an effort than others should appreciate! He will be missed and the Soap World will not be the same without him....
There are no words. I can not believe daytime television has lost such a brilliant story teller and visionary. I was shocked to find out about this while watching the end of Days of our Lives today. At the end of the show, Friday, October 24th, it said, "In Memory of James E. Reilly." I remember back in 1999 when Passions premeired. I couldn't wait, especially after seeing what he had done to Marlena on Days of our Lives in the now famous "Possession" storyline. He made me want to be a writer and it is thanks to his show Passions, that I finally began writing. After having dropped out of school, which was a huge mistake on my part, I began watching Passions and really getting into the characters and it made me want to create my own show. Passions had a heart and an essence that no other soap had. I wish I could have met the man to let him know how much his show inspired me. I continue to write and I owe it all to Mr. Reilly. My condolences go out to his family in this diffic
I, too, am saddened by the death of this great writer. Without a shadow of a doubt Mr. Reilly was a master storyteller who pushed boundaries and delved into unchartered territories with his vivid imagination of storytelling. For Jason B, I agree with you in many ways. I wish I could have met this man as well. I want to be a soap writer, too. Maybe we can hook up. My email address is toddsixsevenzeroninetwwonine at msndotcom. I hope you can figure out my email address since this site will not post it. I have six numbers after my name before the msndotcom part. Please contact me. hanks. Finally, may you rest in peace, Mr. Reilly. Say hello to William J. Bell and Douglas Marland for me. Someday, I hope I can be as famous you all were in your abilities to tell stories and to see them play out on TV. To that end, these three great men are deeply missed!!!
I liked J Reilly's writing and will miss the crazy things he came up with. Please except the Burk Family's condolences and know that he is up there watching his friends and family and making God laugh. He will always be with the close family and friends laughing and showing his spirit is with all of those that were near and dear to him.
I, too, started watching Passions by accident (not being a soap fan). His character of Allistar was something else! His character was the one you love to hate (or hate to love)! He always left me wanting more. I had read where he was a bit reclusive, but when he was on screen he did it brilliantly. I didn't see him on the final episode of Passions, which disappointed me. If he was there, I missed it. I so hoped that Passions would continue, and am still mad at both NBC and DirecTV for it. I loved the actors, and hope to see all of them soon. May God be with he and his family. His work is done, and he can now rest peacefully in the Lord's arms.
