Fan FrenzyY&R's 2003 Fan Club LuncheonJess Walton (Jill) informed the first-timers of what to expect: "Just a lot of love. The fans are here because they love us, and we're here because we love them, and that's what it's all about. There's a lot of laughter, which is always good, and the food is good, too!"
At noon, the main event began. Peter Bergman (Jack) and Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki) had a ball introducing their fellow cast members to the crowd. Due to the large cast and the rounds of applause, the introductions alone took nearly 45 minutes. Once everyone got settled in, a 30-year retrospective was shown to the crowd, which included some of the most memorable moments of Y&R. A steak and salmon lunch was served during the show.
Co-Executive Producer/Co-Head Writer Jack Smith was unable to attend because he was scouting locations for the next remote. He did, however, convey the following message: "This is the best audience in the world because they want to be here. They're gung ho about the show, and we're gung ho about them being here. It's a real lovefest. I love to hear what they like, what they don't like, how they want stories to go and not go, what's of interest to them, what works for them. There are different opinions all the time, but it's always good to know how your audience reacts. Even though I can't be there in person, I'll be getting a full report."
Next up was the Y&R Trivia Game with the fans from 1:30-2 p.m., hosted by Jeanne Cooper (center, with co-host Walton and Michelle Stafford, Phyllis, far l.), along with Thad Luckinbill (J.T.). During the fun and games, Walton cracked that Cooper and Luckinbill had similar hairstyles and wondered to the roar of the crowd if J.T. could really be Katherine's illegitimate child!
Outside, a tardy David Lago (Raul) took time to pose for pictures and sign autographs for a bevy of female fans.
Although Williams was in L.A. during the recent massive power outage on the East Coast, she has family ties in Toronto. "My aunt from Denmark called and said that it was on the news that all of the United States and Canada was in a blackout," she laughed. "Happily, my mother was in the house already, so she just stayed there. These catastrophes remind you not to take things for granted. Maybe once in awhile a city should shut down and just relax."
