GUIDING LIGHT Interview

Hey, Daddy-O

— By Danielle McClure

In honor of Father's Day on June 21, Digest chatted with real-life pop Bradley Cole (Jeffrey, GL) about his adorable offspring.

Soap Opera Digest: How are your kiddos these days?
Bradley Cole: They're great. My little boy [Sean] will be 3 in July and my little girl [Maya] just turned three months, so this will be her first Father's Day. I'm hoping she'll get me something nice [laughs].

Digest: Do you like being pampered on Father's Day?
Cole: It's a nice day. I always enjoy it. and enjoy spending time with my own father. It's a special day and being a father is even better. I've only had the experience for two years. Maybe they'll make me waffles or something in the morning. We'll see what happens!

Digest: What does Sean think about his new sister?
Cole: He loves her. He's a good big brother. He gives her her binky and kisses her and is just such a good kid, though I'm sure when we leave the room he's like trying to strangle her [laughs]!

Digest: Do you notice a difference in being a dad to a little girl?
Cole: Well, she is just this blob of human flesh right now who poops and sleeps and is getting fatter by the day so there's nothing really to report at this point [laughs] I'm very interested to see who Maya is going to be.

Digest: What's Sean's personality like?
Cole: He's a character. He is who he is already. It's so exciting to watch that. [My wife] Yoko comes from a place in Japan called the Kansai region and it's known for the people being very comedic and cracking jokes — bad jokes — but jokes, all the time. Sean definitely takes after her in that way. He's a joker and loves to laugh. He sees humor in everything. He laughs at his father a lot, especially!

Digest: Sounds like he's a handful. Any embarrassing moments that have come along with being father to toddler?
Cole: We have learned the hard way that you can't really go out to eat in restaurants and stuff, but we do anyway even though we know it's going to be a nightmare! You can't ask a 3-year-old to just sit there and be polite. That doesn't exist. Everyone says it's the "terrible twos" and we were just talking to some friends whose kid just turned three and they said, "Oh, yeah. Three is worse!"

Digest: What's your favorite thing to do with your kids?
Cole: I like to sit down at the piano and whenever I do, Sean crawls underneath and gets on the stool next to me. So I love playing the piano with him. He's pretty good! He's getting the hang of it. It's a lot of fun.

Digest: Do you read to him?
Cole: Yeah. He likes the Dr. Seuss books and I liked that stuff when I was a kid, too, especially the Cat In The Hat. He likes it because it's weird and out there, and he's kind of weird and out there, too [laughs]!

Digest: Do you ever worry that you're becoming your own father?
Cole: I am my father! We all become our parents in the end. When I was a younger adult, I thought I was so different but now here I am with my wife and two children and, you know, just trying to be the best father I can and I think that's what he was trying to do, too.

I have been watching GL for 37 years, I strongly feel you will be making a very serious mistake, CBS should reconsider.GL is part of our lives, I got my second husband hooked on it, he is from Peru. Reva and Josh I have been growing younger with you, both of you are excellent actors and love your spunk Reva, your caracter reminds of me,it feels good. Please, please do not cancel GL,maybe if the time slot would changed like before you would have more ratings.I will manifest the show going on for many years to come.I truly believe that it would be a grave mistake to cancel. I know this world revolves aroung money, but maybe you could add a little love for the fans and keep airing this wonderful, fantastic show. All of your characters are very good and they complement Riva and Josh very well. I have been meaning to get in touch with you for many years, this a very good reason to do today, from Miami a devoted Cuban-American that will always(hey Riva and Josh) remain loyal to GL. Thank you,KG

I am a longtime viewer of GL (since 1962. My favorite storyline the past two years has been the story of Jeffrey and Reva. I have never liked Josh with Reva so I was thrilled they paired Jeffrey with her. They are two grown-up people who deal with their lives in a way that is fun and compelling to watch. They have kept me tuned in to GL when other storylines were boring. I will miss Kim and Bradley and I hope they turn up on another soap so I can watch them.

I will admit I was probably a lukewarm GL fan until the day Bradley Cole rode up to Cassie on that beautiful white horse on the beach of San Cristobel. When he swept her off her feet, I went with her. Bradley has brought such class to GL in his portrayal of two totally diverse characters, Prince Richard & Jeffrey. He saved his best awesome performance for these last 2 years as Reva's husband. WOW! What a dynamic couple! The entire GL cast is in a word "superb" & should be commended for carrying GL through some horrific writing. That, after all, is the one positive result of this tragedy: this writing team will be put out of it's misery. I do hope they are never allowed an opportunity to ruin another show. And to whoever at the top is responsible for failing to renew GL's contract, no game or talk show will ever hold a candle to GL. GO BRADLEY & KIM!

I love Jeffery and Reva together, now that is a love story. Just because she was with Josh for 20 years doesn't mean that is her true love. I see a real connect with Jeffery and Reva. It is sad the writers are going to skrew it up at the end.

I am 58 yrs old and I remember my mother watching "Guiding Light". How could you? I adjusted to the outside shootings and now I can't go back to the old format with another soap. You somewhat wrapped it all up but you should have had me on your writing staff. In the back-ground of the park while everyone was having fun, you should have had all those who had died watching on. You could have included Jeffrey and possibly Edmond. We would have gotten the picture and poor Josh wouldn't have had to live the rest of his life with Reva thinking the chace was still on. I can't believe something couldn't have been worked out to save the show, now we get to see a second showing of the "Price is Right"! That will really draw the crowd!!!!
