YOUNG AND RESTLESS Interviews

Y&R's Elizabeth Hendrickson: "Mean Girl"

— By Janet Di Lauro

What started as a 10-episode arc as a bitchy stylist transformed into a meaty contract character and an even meatier storyline for Elizabeth Hendrickson (Chloe, YOUNG AND RESTLESS). The actress, who first came to daytime audiences' attention as Bianca's girlfriend, Frankie, on ALL MY CHILDREN (and then returned as her bisexual twin sister Maggie), is enjoying every manipulative minute of playing the complex Genoa City bad girl.

Soap Opera Weekly: Did you know Chloe was going to be Esther's daughter, Kate, from the start?
Elizabeth Hendrickson: I had no idea. I was so excited when I found out Chloe was going to have some family ties. I knew it would give me, as an actor, a chance to finally explain to viewers why Chloe is the way she is. She's not just this bitch who likes to destroy people's lives. This [story turn] gives me the opportunity to show people that Chloe is damaged goods. She was missing a mother and a family, and the love that every child needs and deserves. She wasn't raised by her [parents]. She never had anyone tell her wrong from right.

Weekly: Have you had a hand in Chloe's development?
Hendrickson: The character was written as a stylist who was coming in. I was the one who wanted to make her edgy and funny. Most of the people I know who are in the fashion business are a little bitchy. I wanted to make Chloe interesting, instead of just playing her like some girl who was putting on fancy clothes. There was no conflict there. The writers definitely gave me that in the writing, and I tweaked it a little. They seemed to enjoy it. Each day, Chloe kept getting funnier and bitchier.

Weekly: Once Chloe's identity was revealed, you got to work with one of Y&R's greats, Jeanne Cooper (Katherine). What has that been like?
Hendrickson: Jeanne has been so nice and welcoming to me. I remember one day I was having a rough time. I had these emotional scenes where I was sitting on the couch, crying, and everyone was sort of attacking Chloe. It was a lot of material, and I was clearly having some trouble with it. Jeanne came over, grabbed my hand, and said, "Stop thinking about it. Just go." She gave me this comfortable reassurance that I really needed at that moment.

Weekly: Did you mold Chloe after anyone, or does she remind you of any character you've seen in a film or on TV before?
Hendrickson: There was a time when Cane and Chloe really started interacting and Chloe started threatening him. Daniel (Goddard, Cane) and I had talked about it. We were playing a sort of Fatal Attraction [scenario]. So, yes, I've definitely channeled my inner Glenn Close at times. But I'm trying really hard not to make Chloe go down the crazy path. I don't think she's crazy. She just desperately wants to be loved.

Weekly: Speaking of Cane, as Chloe, you're put in the unenviable position of coming between a beloved couple: Cane and Lily. Is that hard, because viewers aren't exactly loving Chloe?
Hendrickson: I understand that. You watch two characters come together and you root for them; then someone comes and messes it up. But it's a soap opera. [No couple] lasts forever. The funny thing is Christel (Khalil, Lily) and I have become really good friends in real life. Whenever we have these bitchy scenes with each other, we end up hugging each other at the end of them. The other day, we were saying, "I hope [our characters] become friends again," although I don't think it will be in the near future. But Christel and I don't like yelling at each other on-set.

Having Elizabeth on Y & R has got me to do two things I never thought I would do. 1st one: Start watching Y & R and enjoying it. 2nd: buy soap mags about Y & R. EH is one of the best actresses and her portrayal of Chloe adds so much to Y & R. I am looking forward to the future with Chloe and Billy.

I really hate Chloe and don't believe that the character has added anything to the show. I don't love to hate her - I just hate her. No offense to EH, but the character development is not there. Every character in GC has gone to Boarding School and the writers made it clear that Chloe is the one who rejected her mother, not the other way around. So, nope - still doesn't make sense why Chloe is the way she is. Cane and Lily's separation didn't get interesting until Billy Miller's version of Billy Abbott showed up in Genoa City.

I not only love Chloe, but i love the idea of Chloe and Billy together. I think that they have a lot of chemistry just with those stolen looks at eachother. I also think EH has a lot of chemistry as an actress and she has fireworks with any actor that she is paired up with. I think that as this character progresses viewers will come around and hopefully route for Billy and Chloe.

I don't care what anybody says, EH is a great addition to this show along with her character. I haven't had so much fun watching Y&R in years until Chloe.(And Billy Abbott is great too) I do think Chloe is hurting. Characters like this always have something that causes them to do the ill that they do. She was SENT away and every child is different in how things affect them. Chloe deals in her own way. I'm enjoying EH and BM and their performance brillant together and seperately. I can't wait to see what the future holds for Billy and Chloe. I think they are a dynamic and intriguing duo and the possibilities are endless in what these two can be as a couple and the havoc they can cause in Genoa City. Peter Bergman has spoken highly about EH and anyone with eyes can see why.

I don't believe Lane is a popular as some of their proponents like to imply. My impression is the couple has a strong base of fifteen year old girls with multiple freemail accounts and message board screen names. Oh, woe! Chloe broke up St. Lily and her 34 year old moron boyfriend! The horror!

To the poster Lucy above. You could not have been more wrong about Lane fan base. Apparently what you fail to see that Lane has brought romance and honesty to their relationship. Despite their age differences, they have an adult relationship where they communicate with each other. No lies, no pretense exist betwen them. As for your assumption that we are fifteen years old, you are so wrong. We are intelligent adults who have or seek strong, honest relationships in our lives. And Lane is the epitome of strong love.

Dear Lucy, STFU!!! You don't have a clue what you are talking about.

Reply to Lucy. Whie I respect others opinions, I have to wonder what you base your assumption on. All of the LANE fans who I know personally are all adults. Some single, some married, some married with children. None of us are teenagers! There is no need to operate under various screen names, because there are plenty of us out here. Like QS said, we are all intelligent fans who enjoy the love story of LANE. Soaps are missing these days. There is plenty of liars and cheaters. Cane and Lily brought back the romance and the love that has been lacking on YR for years. They are why I watch. Oh, BTW, I am 34 years old.

OKAY this story line with Chloe has gone on long enough - I turn the channel to Judge Judy when they come on, when is the truth going to come out?

I'd forgotten I'd left a post here until I read the piece on CLB on another page and then followed the link to this. Nice use of verbiage, Erica! Way to prove your basic maturity level. Note: grown ups don't talk that way. Fifteen year olds, OTOH, are common adherents of the theory that swear words are really cool and sophisticated. Back to the basic issue here: the concrete facts of the matter are that EH is getting all, and I do mean all, of the critical accolades. CK is really pretty. Lily is insipid, Cane is an idiot. They are insupportable. The two characters floating this quad are Chloe Ashby and Billy Abbott.

I have been watching Y&R from the time it first aired. When I find I won't be able to watch, I record it. It would be a crime to cancel the show. I feel conected to the show and the characters. I am 65 years old, and the main reason I'm still alive is because of Y&R. I refuse to die as long as it is televised. I can't understand why anyone would want to remove it from tv. So many people have become addicted to the show. I wouldn't go so far as to say I wouldn't watch CBS again if they dropped the show, but my suffering would be great. Actually, I am amazed that the subject crossed anyone's mind. Please! Please take the pain and suffering you would inflict on untold viewers into account. Yep, I'm starting to beg. I have 292 characters left to try to persuade you, but I'll stop now. I'm sure more words would just be more words to you. Consider what the last characters left may say! There are 113.

For anyone who think Chloe is the Great White Hope is as cluless as the actress who plays her.
