Since I cover ATWT, friends of mine who couldn't have cared less about soaps a few months ago are now bugging me about the Luke/Noah story. One friend of a friend started TiVoing for "Nuke" and called her yesterday to complain about the rest of the show. "Get this, there's this one lady who has a brain tumor or something — it's absolutely ridiculous!" he told my obsessed-with-all-things-Michael Park (Jack)-friend as if she didn't already know (and hadn't been grilling me about Carly's ailment for weeks). The lesson from all of this is that if you're going to lure in new viewers with one story, you've got to make sure the rest of the show is stellar, to keep them hooked. Today, I tried to watch ATWT from a newcomer's perspective. Aside from the shaky camera work (no comment, because they've already been criticized a lot for this budgetary solution), I thought the Carly stuff was actually quite poignant and easily understandable, the Craig/Rosanna confrontation was somewhat confusing (although Cady McClain looked fabulous!) and that Dusty drinking, talking to himself and circling murder suspects on his little investigation pad before passing out was, admittedly, kind of silly. The Luke/Maddie and Noah/Lily scenes were meaty, but if I had never seen these people before, would I want to watch again? I guess I'd want to find out if that lady with the brain tumor lives and if she gets together with that guy who pulled her out of her possibly suicidal bathtub soak (Brad). Sure, it's soapy, but oddly, I'm just wondering if it's not campy enough for casual viewers.

From Joe Diliberto
GUIDING LIGHT's Alan made light of the Lewis building collapse while sparring with Cassie today. Recall that Cassie claimed blame for the collapse last week to protect Josh and Billy. Perhaps Cassie was also responsible for the jaw-droppingly tasteless decision to play the building-collapse story the week of the sixth anniversary of the Twin Towers disaster. Could the timing have been worse? GL is shot in New York, so there's no excuse for forgetting that traumatic date.
