You're a little late with your review this week.
Thorsten Kaye: Yes, I would like to apologize for this being so late. I was emotionally not in a position to give this interview because I was so moved by Cameron's
performance. I haven't slept since Monday. First of all, the story that came out of the tango is amazing to me. When he took his glasses off, the story that Cameron was telling me was, "There is no more disguising who I am." You know how he jumped on the steps? That was his leap into manhood. Susan (Haskell) was trying to talk to me during that and I said, "You don't understand what courage it took for this man to do this." I couldn't put it into words, but dance aficionados know. I think he had a very strong finish. Again, it was the story of a boy going into manhood.
How is Cameron doing?
Kaye: I think he's getting stronger all the time. He seems to be having more fun.
Next week is the Paso Doble — here's another thing people don't realize: It's actually called the Pasa-dena. I used to teach this when I was living in the valley. It's an old Spanish traditional dance based on a little
village in the valley. To those people who are just watching this show for
the "Oh my God!" entertainment value, I want to give them a sense of
history. That's what I feel my job is. I try to teach.
What's your prediction for next week?
Kaye: I'm a little concerned about the Paso Doble because there is the paso-bility
— get it? — of him wearing something horrible. We sat down and talked about the open shirt and the message he was sending to the Midwest by wearing it. I think we're on the same page now.
Did he apologize for wearing it?
Kaye: He did in his own way. He shed some tears. I don't know if that came from
the embarrassment of what he wore or from having to make eye contact with me as his dance master. That happens. I see the raw emotion coming out of the dancer and I let it go. "Lesson learned." That's what teachers do.
