Shawn and Belle found shelter from a man named Merle. He took them to a room and told them to keep their cell phones off, so they couldn't be traced. They could make calls from a pay phone in the hall. Merle asked Shawn and Belle if they were really Claire's parents and not kidnappers. They assured him that Claire was their daughter. Merle took out a map and pointed out countries that don't have an extradition treaty with the US. Later, Shawn counted their cash and told Belle they barely had enough to get to Montreal. Belle suggested selling her wedding ring and told Shawn that she was glad he was back in her and Claire's life. Shawn was glad, too, because Claire was with her parents and that was all that counted.

Victor ordered Lucas to fly to Toronto to find Claire and bring her home, but Lucas refused. This wasn't Titan business. Lucas suggested Philip track down Claire, but Victor opposed the idea. Between the war and losing Belle and Claire, Philip couldn't handle it. Victor pressed Lucas to change his mind, insisting that Philip wouldn't press charges if Shawn and Belle returned with Claire. Again, Lucas said no. Victor told Lucas he had a choice: get on the next flight to Toronto or start looking for another job. "You can take your job and shove it," said Lucas.

Nick called Abby to discuss Chelsea and Billie's request to find Chelsea a job at the lab. There was just one problem: Dr. Rebert, who does the interviewing, was Lonely Splicer. Just then, Nick's boss told him there was an opening for a lab assistant. Later, Dr. Rebert announced he had a candidate to interview and in walked Chelsea, who recognized Dr. Shane Patton. Fortunately, for Nick, it was a daydream. At the pub, Abby told Chelsea that she'd decided to go to college full-time. Chelsea was delighted. She and Abby could join a sorority. Chelsea always dreamt of living in a big house with a sorority mom to give her advice. Chelsea reminisced about her late "mom," Mrs. Benson. Abby reminded Chelsea that she had Billie, but Chelsea said Billie had her own life and guy. Nick arrived and told Chelsea that there were no jobs at the hospital. After Abby left, Chelsea asked Nick if he had any idea who her mom's boyfriend was. Nick gulped and said he didn't. Chelsea called Nick an amazing friend and planted a kiss on his lips. Nervous Nick tried to go. Chelsea asked him to help celebrate her going to college and he agreed. As the pair turned to leave, the phone at the pub began ringing. Little did they know it was Shawn calling.

Sami went to see EJ at the police station and brought up Lexie witnessing EJ shoot John. "Except she didn't," countered EJ, noting that Lexie lied and was now on the run with Tek. EJ said the cops had no evidence linking him to John's shooting. While he was in the boathouse waiting for Sami that night, he left before John or his assailant arrived. Still, Sami accused EJ of being behind John's attack and Lexie and Tek's disappearance. EJ mentioned the night they "made love," and Sami spat, "You raped me!" EJ said Sami "wanted it" as much as he did. Sami explained that she wasn't there to relive that, but to reassure EJ that she told no one about seeing him. Hence, he had no reason to target her or her family. EJ told Sami he'd be free soon and planned to rebuild his business. He wanted Sami to work for him. "No," said Sami, who just wanted EJ to promise she wouldn't end up dead. EJ insisted he'd never harm the mother of his child. Sami lied that she'd used protection that night. "I'll just have to try harder next time," taunted EJ. Sami threatened to kill him if he ever came near her again. Later, EJ was released and phoned Kate, suggesting a business meeting. "Clothing optional," he cooed.

Sami and Lucas returned home, and Lucas filled Sami in on his meeting with Victor and getting fired. Sami suggested she get a job, but Lucas insisted he'd support their family. Sami asked Lucas to keep their pregnancy a secret. "I don't want to hear anyone say, 'Oh, the poor kids. Now is such a bad time to have a baby,'" noted Sami. Lucas agreed to keep mum.

Mimi walked in on Bonnie and Connor, who were covered in dirt after burying the skeleton bones, and demanded to know what they were up to. She pulled out the police sketch of the guy who was at the morgue where the bones were stolen and asked if it looked familiar. Connor caved and admitted Bonnie made him help her. Bonnie denied it, and Connor clammed up. Mimi stormed out, saying she'd find out for herself. Mimi returned holding the bag of bones and threatened to call the cops if Bonnie and Connor didn't 'fess up. Connor admitted the bones were their father's. Mimi asked what happened. When Bonnie wouldn't say, Mimi asked if Bonnie killed her dad. Connor begged Mimi to forget this, insisting that he didn't know what happened. When Connor went to bed, Mimi warned Bonnie that she was taking the bones to the cops in the morning.

Chelsea tried to convince Abby to become a full-time college student, but she said no. "We'll have all the hot guys after us," noted Chelsea. Abby wondered if Chelsea had really given up on Dr. Shane Patton. Outside, Nick asked Billie if she thought Chelsea would be hurt if she found out they "hooked up." Billie thought Chelsea would be grossed out. Kids don't like to think about their parents having sex. Nick said he wasn't a kid and enjoyed his "first time" with Billie, who noted it wouldn't have happened if she hadn't been drinking. Billie promised not to breathe a word about their night together. She believed Nick was a good influence on Chelsea and that her daughter really liked him — Chelsea just didn't know it yet. Inside, Chelsea told Abby it was over with Dr. Patton, and she was moving on. Nick returned, and Abby left. Nick asked Chelsea what she planned to study at school, and she begged him to help her find a job. Nick explained that he wanted to keep his work and personal lives separate, and Chelsea understood. Nick eventually gave in, however, and said he'd ask about a job. Chelsea couldn't believe how great Nick was and gave him a kiss, much to his delight.

Roman told Sami and Lucas that EJ was back in town. He'd turned himself in, and Roman arrested him. Sami wondered what EJ revealed about the night John was shot. Roman noted that EJ said he had friends who could clear his name; particularly, Sami. Roman explained that there was no case against EJ since Lexie lied about seeing him shoot John and she and Tek were missing. Sami said Tek and Lexie weren't coming back, because EJ killed them and she was next. Lucas tried to calm Sami down and suggested she tell Roman their news. Sami announced she was pregnant. Roman and Lucas both promised not to let anyone hurt Sami or her baby. Roman asked when he could start spreading the baby news. Sami insisted it was too early. Billie stopped by, and Sami told her the news about EJ. Sami said she had to go talk to him and convinced a reluctant Billie to help cover for her with Lucas. Lucas returned from a business call, saying he had to go see Victor, but didn't want to leave Sami alone. Sami insisted she'd be fine.

At the police station, Kate greeted EJ with a slap. Thanks to his fleeing the country, all her assets were frozen. "What was I supposed to do, Kate, stand around and wait to be arrested?" countered EJ, noting that the police were setting him up because he'd threatened to expose their corruption. Kate asked if EJ shot John, and he denied it. He was halfway to Guadalajara when John got shot. EJ said he had lawyers working to get Mythic back open for business. "You really expect me to continue working with you?" asked Kate. "My darling, I expect you to keep sleeping with me," answered EJ, telling Kate she had to choose between her loyalty to John and their partnership. A torn Kate filled EJ in on what happened the night John was shot, noting how Sami supposedly saved Lucas by herself. Kate believed EJ helped her, but he swore he didn't. Kate didn't believe him. EJ told Kate that he could have Mythic Communications dissolved, but would miss her. Then, before heading off with the cops, EJ gave Kate a steamy kiss goodbye.

Lucas was thrilled about Sami's pregnancy. Unfortunately, Sami couldn't stop crying, realizing the baby could be EJ's. Lucas went on about how much he'd always wanted another child and called this baby a miracle. After all, it was conceived the night Sami saved his life. Lucas ran out for a moment, and EJ phoned Sami. He told Sami he was back in town for her. There was "unfinished business" between them. Sami said she knew EJ shot John, but kept her word and didn't tell anyone she saw him that night. EJ, in turn, said he kept his word by helping her save Lucas. Sami told EJ never to call her again and hung up. When Lucas returned, he found Sami crying and assumed she didn't want to have this baby. He told her not to worry, they'd find a way to make it work.

Abby and Nick arrived at the pub to meet Chelsea, who said she wanted their forgiveness for all the mean things she'd said to them. "Are we being punk'd? Is Ashton going to come out in a second?" cracked Nick. Chelsea insisted she was for real, crediting Shane Patton with her turnaround. Abby pointed out that Shane has signed off on Chelsea, so she should move on. Chelsea said she couldn't. She loved him. Billie arrived and Chelsea asked her mom to join them, much to Nick's dismay. Chelsea showed everyone an acceptance letter to Salem University. Billie was delighted, although she couldn't afford tuition. Chelsea said she'd be able to get a scholarship. Between that and a job, she'd have no problems swinging tuition. Billie was surprised Chelsea had a job. Chelsea admitted she didn't, yet. Billie asked if Nick could get Chelsea a job at the lab, and he said no, until Chelsea begged him. Chelsea noted that once she was in a dorm, Billie could have their apartment to herself to entertain her secret boyfriend. Billie said she didn't have a secret boyfriend and left, followed by nervous Nick. Alone, Chelsea and Abby discussed school, while Nick caught up with Billie and told her they had to talk.

En route to Canada, Steve stopped to phone Kayla and tell her that he, Shawn, Belle and Claire were safe. Steve wanted to leave, but Shawn insisted on getting coffee. When he snuck off, Shawn called Philip. "We're just about to cross the finish line," taunted Shawn, noting that Philip would never see Claire again. Philip stormed into Roman's office, went off about the police not being able to find Claire, and recounted his call from Shawn. Roman noted that Philip and Victor were planning to take Claire out of the country, too. Philip accused Roman of not helping him because of his animosity toward the Kiriakis family. Roman denied it and the two men argued until Philip left. Then, EJ pranced into Roman's office. He'd heard the cops wanted to talk to him. EJ denied shooting John and noted how the police had no witnesses, since Lexie and Tek were missing. When Roman asked why EJ came back, he said to see old friends like Sami. Roman went on about what a good man John was, but EJ said John got what he deserved after breaking into his safety deposit box and planting bugs in his apartment. Roman called in another officer to book EJ. Later, Philip returned, noting that Shawn and Belle were going to need money eventually, so they’d probably hock Belle's wedding ring. When they did, alarms would go off. Roman realized Philip had reported the ring stolen.

While driving, Steve had another episode and yelled out for it to stop. Shawn woke up and asked if Steve was okay. Steve told Shawn they were 20 miles from the border. Soon, sirens sounded and a cop car was behind them. Shawn and Belle wanted to pull over, but Steve said they couldn't. Shawn climbed into the driver's seat as Steve went to the back of the truck and started tossing boxes onto the road. After losing the cops, Steve instructed Shawn and Belle not to stop for anything, as they were near the border. Once they crossed it, they should ditch the truck. Then, Steve jumped out. Later, having gotten to Canada, Shawn and Belle stood in the snow discussing their next step.

Sami and Lucas cuddled and marveled over Sami's Good Samaritan plaque. "It just doesn't seem real, does it?" asked Sami. Lucas said he knew Sami had changed. When Sami seemed uncomfortable, Lucas suggested that something was bothering her — namely, Philip barging into the pub and accusing everybody of helping Belle and Shawn kidnap Claire. Sami swore she had nothing to do with it, and Lucas believed her. Heck, even Kate apologized for misjudging Sami. Lucas believed his mom wanted a fresh start. Sami didn't, but agreed to meet Kate halfway. Sami asked Lucas if he was happy. Lucas assured Sami that he was and loved her madly. Sami, who was feeling nauseated, reacted by running off to the bathroom, leaving Lucas perplexed. When she returned, Lucas was getting off the phone with Roman. Lucas explained that Lexie was missing and that she wasn't the one who witnessed EJ shoot John; it was Tek. Therefore, the case against EJ was blown. Sami worried that EJ arranged for Tek and Lexie to disappear and that she and Lucas might be next. Then, she rushed off to the bathroom again. Lucas wanted to call a doctor, but Sami said not to and announced she had something to tell him. "I'm pregnant," she cried.

Steve arrived in a delivery truck and went inside the church to pick up Belle, Shawn and Claire. Philip showed up, spotted Claire's stuffed bunny on the ground, and smiled, knowing he was closing in on the little girl. Steve stepped outside to call Kayla. She was at the penthouse to support Marlena, who was worried about the Shawn and Belle situation. Steve explained that he, Belle, Shawn and Claire were about to hit the road and promised to keep in touch. Kayla shared the news with Marlena; then, went off to call Stephanie, while Marlena curled up on the couch, holding John's picture. After hanging up, Steve noticed footprints in the snow and realized someone else was there. Belle and Shawn prepared to leave, until Philip walked in determined to stop them. Shawn accused Philip of wanting revenge. Philip swore all he cared about was Claire, who deserved better than Shawn and Belle. Philip and Shawn got into a major fistfight, and Philip knocked Shawn down. As Philip headed toward Belle and Claire, Steve emerged and knocked Philip out. Steve told Belle and Shawn that they had to get out of there, pronto! Shawn, however, convinced Steve to do something, first: lock up Philip. Alone, Philip screamed for help. Fortunately, a cop arrived and freed him. Philip told the cop to call for help, while he phoned Victor. The officer informed Philip there was a lead on a delivery truck that was stolen nearby.

While driving, Steve suggested that Belle, Shawn and Claire leave the US via a freighter ship. Shawn mentioned going to Montreal. Steve said they'd have to pay a crew member about $2000 to hide them and quickly realized Belle and Shawn didn't have much cash with them. Steve suggested that perhaps Kayla was right and they were making a mistake running away. Shawn asked Steve to lay off, and he did. Steve just wanted them to know that life on the run wasn't going to be easy. Steve encouraged Shawn and Belle to get some sleep before they crossed the border to Canada, because, then, they were on their own.

At the penthouse, a dreaming Marlena murmured John's name, as she heard him calling out, "Doc...Help me." Marlena walked out to the balcony looking for him and saw John's face. Marlena reached out for John; then, suddenly, woke up. Kayla rushed outside, and Marlena told her that John was trying to reach out to her. Marlena recounted John whispering the word "killer" and looking up at Steve just before he had surgery. Perhaps Steve was in danger. Kayla recounted the episodes Steve was having. She was sure Stefano was behind them. Marlena offered to help Steve professionally, and suggested hypnosis.

Bo and Kayla were discussing Shawn and Belle kidnapping Claire when Steve arrived. He said that he'd found EJ and showed Bo and Kayla the wallet, cell phone and visa he'd swiped from him. If EJ wanted to replace the visa, he'd have to return to the USA. When Bo left to see Abe, Steve explained that he got more out of EJ. "He knows about these meltdowns I've been having," said Steve, noting that EJ even brought up Benjy. Steve reminded Kayla how his episodes began after having dinner with Benjy and his wife. Kayla begged Steve to let the police handle this, but Steve said he needed to talk to Benjy himself. Kayla implored Steve to let her help him deal with this.

Max and Mimi packed up Shawn, Belle and Claire's things. When Max left to deliver them, Philip arrived and demanded that Mimi tell him where Claire was. Mimi insisted she didn't know and told Philip to go. Philip refused unless Mimi told him where Shawn and Belle took his daughter. Mimi reminded Philip that Claire wasn't his kid and accused him of doing all this to get revenge on Belle. Philip swore it wasn't revenge. He pointed out that he'd tried "to be the good guy," but ended up losing everything. Now, he was living by Victor's philosophy: doing whatever it takes to get what he wants. "You either tell me where Shawn and Belle took my daughter or you give me no choice," threatened Philip. Then, he locked the door, took Mimi's cell, and phoned Max.

At their hideaway, Shawn and Belle listened to a radio report about Claire's kidnapping. Belle wanted to take off before the police put up roadblocks. Shawn said they had to wait for Max and Mimi. Max arrived with supplies and warned Shawn and Belle about the roadblocks. They might not make it out of town. Shawn considered calling Steve and Kayla for help. Belle warned they'd tell Bo. Max's phone rang. He recognized Mimi's number, but it was Philip on the line demanding to talk to Belle. Max gave Belle the phone and took off to help Mimi. Philip demanded Belle return Claire. When Belle refused, Philip warned that whatever happened next was on her. Shawn phoned Steve and asked for help to escape to Canada. After talking to Kayla and phoning Bo and getting his approval, Steve called back Shawn, who explained that he, Belle and Claire were at the church where Abby had found Max and Mimi. Steve took off to help them. Meanwhile, at the garage, Philip tied up Mimi. When Max returned, he found her stuffed inside a trunk and freed her. A frantic Mimi told Max to phone Belle and Shawn and warn them that Philip was on his way.

Abe told Lexie there were discrepancies about the night John was shot. According to Lexie's cell phone bill, she couldn't have seen E.J. shoot John. She was on the phone with Abe at the moment of the attack. Lexie finally confessed that Tek had actually witnessed John's shooting. Lexie explained that she was on her way to the hospital when Tek jumped into her car to talk. She got him to leave. Then, Tek witnessed the shooting and returned to the car to tell her about it. Lexie said she'd lied to protect her marriage. "You wanted to protect yourself and your lover," barked Abe. Lexie swore she and Tek were finished. Abe told her that THEY were done and to get out. Later, Lexie emerged with her bags and apologized to Abe for the pain she'd caused him. When Lexie opened the door to leave, Bo was there. Bo said he'd come back later, but Abe told him to come in. Bo filled Abe in on Steve getting EJ's wallet, cell and visa. Abe said it wouldn't do any good. Lexie lied about witnessing John's shooting, when Tek actually had. Neither of them would be viable witnesses now. EJ was going to get away with murder.

Tek picked up Lexie and she explained that Abe figured everything out. Her marriage was over. Tek suggested they run away together. Lexie said she'd never leave her son; then, told Tek to pull his car over so she could get out. Tek said he couldn't see. The car behind him had its bright headlights on. Tek looked up and headed straight for another car. The cars crashed, as Lexie screamed.
