Jonathan didn't want to leave Tammy alone. Cassie said goodbye to her daughter and told Tammy that she loves her. Jonathan stopped the nurse from covering Tammy with a sheet, opting to do it himself. "She used to like it when I tucked her in," sniffed Jonathan. "She said it made her feel safe." Jonathan left and Josh gave Sarah to the nurse so that he could tend to Cassie, who wanted to begin making funeral arrangements immediately. Cassie met with a man from the funeral home, who was taken aback to learn that her daughter had just recently died. Cassie chose to have Tammy buried in her wedding dress. Then she was overcome with emotion and ran out of the room. Cassie and Josh returned to Tammy's hospital room, which was now empty. Cassie lamented that she left Tammy alone. Josh assured that Tammy knew Cassie loved her. The nurse gave Tammy's belongings to Cassie.

Gus was praying for Daisy when Alan walked into the church. Alan indicated that he was there to pray for Tammy. Gus thought Sarah might be a comfort to Jonathan. But Alan said the baby belonged with the Spauldings. Alan ordered Gillespie to leave town, and "G" went to Daisy's room. Gillespie informed Daisy that Tammy would make a full recovery. He convinced her to leave town with him to avoid prison. Gus arrived and Gillespie hid. Gus revealed that Tammy died. "Now that she's dead, everything changes," Gus told Daisy. Gillespie snuck out of the room. Gus put Sydney in Daisy's arms to give her a reason to get clean.

Remy arrived at Dinah and Mallet's room and when Mallet questioned him, Remy admitted that he was the one using Mallet's name to get information on Tammy's hit-and-run. Remy shared his suspicions about Alan's involvement in Tammy's accident. Dinah received a call that Tammy had died and shared the news with a devastated Remy. Dinah, Remy and Mallet went to the Spaulding mansion, and Mallet informed Alan that they believed he was responsible for the accident. Alan used Lizzie as an alibi. Dinah spied a phone number scrawled on a piece of paper and whispered it to Remy. After his interrogators left, Alan burned the phone number. Jonathan walked in, blasting Alan for Tammy's death. Alan said there was no proof tying him to the crime. "I feel very bad for your loss, but I am going to go after custody of little Sarah," Alan shrugged. Jonathan attacked Alan and Spaulding security dragged him away as Jonathan shrieked: "Murderer! Murderer!" Once Alan retired upstairs, Jonathan returned to the mansion and set the room on fire. Meanwhile, Remy found Gillespie.

Today, GUIDING LIGHT celebrated its 70th anniversary by taking a look back at the show's early history. Hugh Downs acted as announcer for the radio version of THE GUIDING LIGHT. A young ingénue fretted because she had been dressed down for flubbing her lines the previous day. As the cast rehearsed, Irna Phillips (played by Beth Ehlers) strode in and watched a scene as the characters of Mary and Ned fretted over their feelings. The announcer explained of Phillips: "She ruled with heart, warmth...and an iron fist." Irna chewed out the announcer, and then lectured the cast for "acting" instead of feeling their scenes. She explained that these characters and situations were real to her. Phillips ordered the rehearsal to continue.

The announcer explained that when Phillips wrote, she acted out all the parts and her secretary Rose had to take it all down. The actors did a commercial for laundry detergent. Jack, one of the network executives, praised Phillip's work but wondered if she was familiar with HELEN TRENT, a program that was breezier and didn't deal with such heavy issues like war, abuse, religion...and incest. "Life is about struggling," Phillips countered. She wrote a scene in which Ned and Mary split because he was already married and therefore wasn't free to marry Mary.

In 1948, Phillips created the Bauer family including Papa, Meta and Bert. Meta committed murder, and Phillips' secretary, Rose, wondered how they would get out of this dilemma. Phillips decided to let viewers vote for whether or not Meta would go to prison. Jack called from the network to tell Phillips that the ratings were through the roof and the viewers had responded 100-to-1 in favor of acquittal. Phillips suggested creating a televised version of THE GUIDING LIGHT in addition to the radio show, and the network reluctantly agreed. The director told the actors about the television show but explained that because they had "no budget," the actors would be wearing their own clothes and doing their own hair. "We're going to have to buy new dresses," the ladies squealed.

On television, the Bauers argued over Meta returning home. Papa didn't understand why Meta didn't want her husband Joe to pick her up at the airport. Irna got a call from the network that they planned to end the radio version of the show. Irna explained that she planned to leave the show but would give them a great story on her way out. Phillips killed off the popular Kathy. "You can't kill her," lamented Rose. "I love Kathy. Everyone loves Kathy." Jack called Phillips to tell her that the viewers were irate and they were getting mail addressed to, "Dear heartless bastards." Phillips dictated a letter to the viewing public explaining that, "As there is birth, there is also death." She asked people to continue watching.

As Rev. Ruthledge explained the credo of THE GUIDING LIGHT, vintage clips of the real THE GUIDING LIGHT were spliced with clips of the current actors recreating the serial and finally culminated with Jonathan weeping at Tammy's bedside. "Only the body dies; the spirit stays with us," Ruthledge reminded before launching into the GUIDING LIGHT prologue: "There is a destiny that makes us brothers, none goes this way alone. All that we send into the lives of others, comes back into our own."

Tammy woke up and Jonathan told her that she would be better soon and would be able to return home with him. Jonathan informed Reva and Cassie about the change in Tammy's condition and Reva immediately rushed to Cassie's bedside. Reva beamed that Jonathan brought Tammy back. Tammy told Jonathan that Sarah didn't belong with Alan but with Jonathan, and begged him to bring the baby to the hospital. Jonathan and Reva left to get Sarah, and Cassie fretted that Tammy was worrying about the infant instead of her own health.

Reva went to the Spaulding mansion and told Alan that Tammy was awake. She accused Alan of using Sarah for his own salvation. "I'm not the only one in this room looking for redemption," Alan reminded. "Amen," Reva agreed, and she pleaded with Alan to let her take Sarah to Jonathan and Tammy. When Alan threatened to have Reva ejected from the mansion, she let herself out instead. Meanwhile, Jonathan kidnapped Lizzie and took her to the church. He explained that he needed her, but Lizzie misunderstood and thought he meant that he needed her. Jonathan set her straight and used Lizzie's cell to offer Alan a trade: Lizzie for Sarah. Alan refused. Lizzie told Jonathan that he was no better than Alan: She and Sarah were just pawns in their power game. "If I can't have the family that you promised me, you are not going to have the precious, perfect family that you want," she warned. Jonathan strangled Lizzie until Beth arrived with Sarah and handed the baby over to Jonathan. A shocked Jonathan promised that he and Tammy would never forget what she had done for them. "Neither will I," Lizzie spat. Beth extracted a promised from Jonathan that he wouldn't cut Lizzie out of Sarah's life, and then forced Lizzie to leave with her.

Tammy asked Cassie to be there for Sarah and Jonathan when she was gone. Cassie told Tammy that she bought her a house and lamented that she wasn't a better mother. "You gave me everything that matters," Tammy assured. Cassie ordered her daughter to have the happy ending that she deserved as Tammy lost consciousness again. Jonathan arrived up with Sarah. "I love being your wife," Tammy beamed as Jonathan handed the baby over to Reva. Jon waxed poetic about all the good days ahead for he and Tammy (jinx!) when Tammy's condition deteriorated again. "We've tried everything we can. Her injuries are very severe," her doctor sighed. Father Ray arrived to give last rites and Jonathan blasted the holy man. "Take your faith and shove it, and shove your prayers," Jonathan railed. Jonathan wept at Tammy's bedside and she reached out to him. Tammy urged Jonathan not to hide his love from Sarah. He shook Tammy and begged her to breathe (which probably wasn't very good for her internal injuries).

Beth returned to the Spaulding mansion and told Alan that she couldn't refuse Tammy's dying request. She believed that Jonathan deserved the chance to be a father, "given when you...what we have done." Alan kicked Beth out of the house as Lizzie cried in the chapel. Jonathan sniffed to Tammy that they were meant to be. He kissed her. "Sarah," Tammy choked before mouthing, "I love you." She flatlined and Jonathan refused to let the doctors near her. Instead, he climbed on top of Tammy and cried.

Jonathan tried to get Tammy to open her eyes, while Cassie called Josh to tell him there was no change in her daughter's condition. Cassie comforted Remy that Tammy was alive because of him, but he wanted to make whoever hurt Tammy pay. Harley arrived at the hospital and tried to comfort Cassie. Harley promised that they would catch the driver who injured Tammy. Cassie told a story about Tammy's dog and regretted not being a more understanding mother.

Lizzie showed up and Jonathan filled her in on the accident. Lizzie wanted to do something to help, but Jonathan only wanted her to leave. Lizzie remembered that Tammy was the first kid who was nice to her in Springfield. Jonathan realized that Lizzie never showed up with Sarah as planned and accused her of being responsible for the accident. The doctor asked to speak to Jonathan about Tammy, and Jonathan ordered Lizzie not to go anywhere. Lizzie apologized to Cassie for her past behavior and Cassie urged her to talk to Tammy when she awoke. Jonathan grabbed Lizzie when she tried to leave. Jonathan shook Lizzie and again accused her of causing the accident. Cassie interrupted the argument and blasted them for causing a scene while Tammy was unconscious. Jonathan covered that he lost it because Lizzie left the baby with Alan. Once Cassie left, Jonathan put Lizzie on notice: "Even if this was Alan's doing, I blame you." Remy showed up as Lizzie ran off. Cassie cried at Tammy's bedside and told her daughter that she wanted her and Jonathan to move into the farmhouse. Cassie assured Jonathan she was glad he was in Tammy's life and they hugged. Remy questioned Lizzie about the accident. Lizzie gave Remy a lead that Jonathan was having trouble with distributors from Outskirts. Lizzie prayed in church. Gus went to the hospital and Harley asked him to talk to Cassie. In Tammy's room, Jonathan pleaded for Tammy to wake up — and she did.

Daisy wondered why Gus hadn't turned her in. He covered with Harley when she called and jokingly accused him of having a "hot number stashed away." Gus told Harley about Tammy's accident. Gus asked Daisy to tell him about her boyfriend "G" and explained that the hit-and-run driver hadn't stopped on purpose. Daisy claimed she didn't know where "G" lived but would try to think of something to help Gus track him down. Daisy rebuffed Gus' suggestion that she had a drug problem and he recounted his own struggles with substance abuse. Daisy promised she wasn't trying to protect "G," but she worried he might turn on her if she helped Gus catch him. Gus left and Remy told him about the phone call Tammy overheard before the accident.

Meanwhile, Daisy called Gillespie, who came to her hotel room. He asked Daisy to leave town with him, but she worried that if she left the hotel room, Gus would turn her into the police. Gillespie promised that he had enough money that they would never be caught. Daisy wondered if their accident was really an accident and Gillespie made the excuse that they were high when he hit Tammy. He was hurt that Daisy didn't trust him. Gus knocked on the door and Daisy helped Gillespie make a speedy exit via the fire escape. Gus planned to help Daisy detox on her own, like he had done (Wait until he breaks out the board games!). Gus ordered Daisy to hand over her drugs, which she did. When Gus left, Daisy removed another pill from her pocket and swallowed it.

Reva and Josh rejoiced over the news she is cancer free. She suggested going sky-diving, but was then nearly overcome with emotion. She balked at Josh's celebration dinner, because the first person she thought of was Cal. He made her promise to "live big" for them both, so she wants to live "without regrets." She told Josh she's glad she's not alone this time and feels safe with him. He thanked her for telling him this time, and she admitted she needs him. They gazed meaningfully at each other then kissed. Then they got word Tammy was in an accident.

As the car drove off, Jonathan tried to rouse Tammy, who croaked, "Car...was gonna hit you," before passing out. Jonathan phoned for help and begged Tammy to wake up. Meanwhile, Cassie gushed over wedding photos with real estate agent Courtney when Jeffrey sauntered by. Cassie asked him to look over a contract — she's buying a house for Tammy. Jeffrey approved the contract and left. A morose Remy happened by just before he got a call about a hit-and-run on Lakehurst. Remy and Gus arrived at the accident scene. Jonathan told Gus about the car. Remy got a first-aid kit and saw the wound on Tammy's tummy just before the EMTs arrived. Meanwhile, Lizzie admonished Alan not to smoke around Sarah, but he was busy gushing over opera and assuring her he's taken care of everything to ensure "Sarah will grow up a Spaulding." Lizzie panicked and wanted to warn Jonathan, but Alan physically restrained her. "Family is everything," he said as he got her some water and pills. Gillespie walked in and Lizzie instantly deduced he was "the guy." At Cedars, Jonathan prayed that Lizzie would be all right. Gus located the car that hit Tammy — with a groggy Daisy in the back seat. It's her boyfriend's car. His name is "G — like the letter." Gus found his stolen gun in the glovebox. She pleaded ignorance and hid when Frank arrived. Gus also hid his gun. At hospital, Rick took over from the EMTs. Remy was somehow already there, with Tammy's blood on his hands. Reva calmed the maniacal Jonathan while Josh called Cassie. Gillespie told Alan "there was a problem" with the job: Some girl "got it." She's "almost dead." Alan exploded and threw Gillespie out. Lizzie arrived at Cedars and was relieved to find Jonathan okay, but distressed that Tammy was in surgery. Jonathan told Reva the car was meant for him. Remy was instantly suspicious that Lizzie knew it was a car accident, but she covered. Josh brought Remy coffee. Remy lamented blowing off Tammy when she called seeking help for Jonathan. Cassie arrived and Josh held her.

Gus brought Daisy to a room at the Beacon to give her time to come down off her high. Alan summoned Lizzie home to leave for an immediate family vacation. He told Sarah her father isn't coming along, but she's got him now. Rick told the family that Tammy's bleeding was under control, but she suffered extensive internal injuries and brain swelling, so all anyone can do is wait for the swelling to subside. Reva said Colin had arranged for a specialist to fly in.

Jonathan barged into Tammy's room and put the ring back on her finger. Remy lit a candle in the chapel. Josh and Cassie leaned on each other. Reva stood alone, then was joined by Lizzie to peer into Tammy's room, where Jonathan sat vigil. Alan comforted little Sarah.
