At the Spaulding manse, Phillip asked Alan why he stopped the wire transfer of Spaulding funds. Alan explained that he's trying to sink Bill, but Phil pointed out that the feds are after James, not Bill. Alan was confused so Phil explained James's Ponzi scheme to his pop and said that James could go to prison for his crimes. Alan said it'd be good for James, adding. "I told you so!" He then told Phillip that he missed the opportunity to take care of rebellious James and now it's too late. Phil implored him to clear the transfer of funds. Alan noted the irony of the situation. "Your ability to save your children hinges on a phone call only I can make."

Daisy and James flirted outside. James got a call from Phil and was shocked that his father was really interested in helping him out of his financial mess. Before he met up with his pop later at Towers, James suggested he and Daisy go for a swim in a nearby pond. Then, at the Beacon, James doodled another drawing for Daisy who was surprised when he said he'd rather be a starving artist than a wheeling and dealing Spaulding. So, Daisy brought James to an art studio and encouraged him to pursue his talent. He pointed out that he's still a Spaulding and no amount of drawing for fun will ever change that. Later, James got a call from Phil explaining that he was forced to tell Alan everything because he stopped the transfer.

At Company, Frank was sulking so Buzz tried to comfort him. Buzz was amazed that Frank would pull some strings for Rafe's release, especially after what Natalia did to him. Frank promised him that he did it for the teen and said he's not supporting Natalia anymore. Meanwhile, Nat and Olivia worried about standing too close in front of a Beacon employee. Nat was excited about Rafe's upcoming hearing; Liv showed her support. Nat observed that his release will change things between them. "It'll be a little complicated," she added and said that she wants to tell him the truth about their relationship in the right way and at the right time.

In Chicago, Bill and Lizzie waited for the detective to come back. Lizzie began her own interrogation of Bill, wondering if he messed up some company paperwork or really did start a Ponzi scheme. They began arguing but Bill assured a freaked out Lizzie that he's innocent. Then it suddenly occurred to Lizzie that she should probably call Phillip. She phoned him and frantically explained what had happened to them. Phil quickly came to Bill and Lizzie's rescue and attempted to square things away with the authorities by writing a check to the man who attacked Bill and accused him of fraud. The detective refused to let it go, however, and inquired about all the other clients who had been swindled by the scheme. Phil threatened to press slander charges on the Chicago PD if they didn't let Bill go. Bill and Lizzie were confused about why they were still being detained. and demanded to know what's going on. Phil beat around the bush and claimed that that's just what happens when you marry into the Spaulding family. He made sure Lizzie was still happy and reminded her that he'd do anything for her. Later, Bill and Lizzie were freed; Phil encouraged them to stay in Chicago to finish out their romantic getaway.

Olivia went to Company to tell Buzz that she wants to do something special for Rafe's homecoming, including presenting him with a special sugar-free cake. She wasn't expecting to also run into Frank, who was understandably cold to her. She thanked him for helping Rafe score a hearing for an early release. He brushed it off and left, saying he's not interested in attending Rafe's hearing. Later, Frank was on edge regarding the Rafe situation and reminded Buzz that he cares for the kid but is afraid of getting too close. "They're not my family!" he yelled. Meanwhile, at the courthouse, the judge told Rafe's legal representation that the teen's case is disturbing and that he thinks Rafe should stay at the halfway house instead of moving back home. He then turned to Nat, who was there to support her son. She assured the judge that, if allowed to come home, Rafe would be in a loving, supportive environment. The judge wasn't so sure, adding "I think Ms. Rivera knows why." Nat shot Olivia, who was standing near the door, a look. The judge explained that Rafe needs a strong male role model/mentor. Frank then suddenly entered the room and volunteered for the job. The judge was pleased and officially released Rafe. Nat was ecstatic and thanked Frank.

Daisy brought a box of art supplies to Company. Buzz teased her about all her other failed "careers" and hobbies, including taking up the glockenspiel. "I'm still trying to find myself, okay!" she grinned and added that James is her new inspiration. He was wary about her hanging out with a Spaulding but told her that he loves her, regardless.

Back at the mansion, Alan confronted James about his misdeeds. They agreed that they don't like each other, but Alan reminded James that he's the only person who can save him — and who won't leave. When Phil called James to check up on him, he didn't answer his phone and decided to hear out Alan, instead.

At the courthouse, Olivia told Rafe she arranged a celebratory party for Rafe's release but he said he's not interested and would like to just spend the evening with his family. Liv felt burned when Rafe invited Frank to stop by later. After, Liv thanked Frank again. "You must love Natalia very much," she said. "I'm not the only one," Frank responded, wryly.
