FEATURESoap Stars Remember Michael Jackson— By Soap Opera Digest and Weekly Staffs Check out daytimers' memories of the King of Pop. Tristan Rogers (Robert, GH)
"I worked with him briefly on the 35th anniversary [of the Jackson 5], but it was a great experience." Evan Alex Cole (Hunter, ATWT)
"Michael Jackson was significant to me in a couple of different ways. Yes, I have a favorite song: 'Earth Song.' I just think that's such a cool song with a very evident message that really resonates with me. I also grew up in a big Beatles household so Michael Jackson was not only the pop icon that he absolutely is, and will always be, he was also a shareholder of the Beatles [music] and I always saw it from that angle. I've been reevaluating what he meant to so many people, and the passing of Michael Jackson is like the passing of John Lennon and the passing of so many great artists. They will always be remembered." Lisa LoCicero (Olivia, GH)
"I remember being in school the day after the Motown 25th [anniversary] aired, when he did the Moonwalk, and it was like we were all high from the excitement. It was a palpable, societal excitement that was pervasive throughout the whole school. We were all so amped up, no one could talk about anything else. Everyone was trying to do it, dancing around in the hallway and on the playground. As for a song, there's something going around now, it's [an a capella version] of 'Rock With You,' and if you listen to it without all the production and the music behind it, you realize just what an incredible vocalist he was, apart from being an incredible showman and an icon. It brought tears to my eyes." Shelley Hennig (Stephanie, DAYS)
" 'Bad!!!!!!!' And why? Because it's a bad-*ss song. :) So was Michael." Daniel Goddard (Cane, Y&R)
ASCAP's 22nd Annual Rhythm and Soul Music Awards was held the day after Michael Jackson's death and Daniel Goddard (Cane, Y&R), who attended the event said the pop star was bigger than life that evening. "There was a nice tribute to him and everyone was paying their respects. It was very moving and celebratory. Everyone was sad but at the same time, there was so much respect. You realized that he left such a huge imprint on music. It's tough when you see someone so iconic die, especially when they had such a sad and tragic life. You just had the feeling that his guy never had a childhood so he captured that with the kids. When things happen that suddenly, it really makes you realize your own mortality." Ashley Jones (Bridget, B&B)
"Michael Jackson did mean something to me. He represented part of my childhood. I remember Dad explaining to me why 'Human Nature' was one of the best written songs (by the way, that song is one of my favorite MJ songs). Also, one of my first prized possessions was the Thriller album. My third grade bus driver gave me that album. She was appalled I didn't own it." Carolyn Hennesy (Diane, GH)
"Met him once. Outside of a movie theatre in Encino. I was in my late teens. He was standing in a corner of the building; perhaps he was waiting to go in, I don't know. Incredibly quiet, but said hello to me as I passed. I just remember how beautiful his face was ... this was long before he decided that enough just wasn't enough ... and his beauty was striking. His was a rare genius ... I don't think we have even begun to feel the ripples his death will cause." Ilene Kristen (Roxy, OLTL)
"It is almost impossible to say which song is my favorite. Every time I have ever heard 'ABC' it fills me with all out joy as does 'I Wanna Be Where You Are.' One of the most exciting clips of his childhood years was 'Who's Lovin' You.' I never saw that video until about 15 years ago.... mind blowing! During the late '70s and early '80s all the up and coming actors used to hang out at a club called Heartbreak and we would dance till the break of dawn. 'Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'' and 'Don't Stop Til You Get Enough' were high points of the evening but the song 'This Place Hotel' (a.k.a 'Heartbreak Hotel') drove me WILD!!! Sexy with an aura of danger ahead 'Place Hotel' was a real preview of what was to come. Without a doubt, 'Thriller' in 1983 changed the music business. And Michael's performance of 'Billie Jean' for the Motown Anniversary was jaw droppingly BRILLIANT, mesmerizing and probably the pinnacle of his career. Obviously I can't pick one song.... I do little pieces of 'Shake Your Body' in my act (I combine it with my own song 'While The Whole World Jams') An adorable child, a sizzling dynamo in his prime and a frail, vulnerable tragic figure of late he belongs to us all in ways that run so deep and everlasting.... his death is like losing a lifelong friend whose stunning musical landscape gave us so so much pleasure. It is a devastating loss to the world." John Brotherton (Jared, OLTL)
" 'Black or White' comes to mind first, probably because it was one of the first cassettes I owned. And the full length music video rocked, it had the elements of a cool short film with a bonus MJ highlight reel." Bradford Anderson (Spinelli, GH)
"I can't pick just one. 'Rock With You,' no matter what mood I'm in, gets me off my feet. 'The Way You Make Me Feel,' is another. There's a song called 'Stranger In Moscow' that was off of HIStory and when I was in high shcool, it was cool at the time to buy big speakers for your car. I lived in New Hampshire and no one had great speakers because no one had a lot of money so when it was my turn to get speakers, someone helped me build a box for the woofers and that song had really big bass in it, so I used to play that song to show off my stereo. I think I was trying to promote my manhood with my speakers but didn't actually promote it with my song choice [laughs]. I don't think that anyone else could say that Michael Jackson helped promote their manhood but whatev [laughs]." John-Paul Lavoiser (Rex, OLTL)
" 'Workin Day and Night' from the Off the Wall album. One of the greatest dance songs ever." Michelle Stafford (Phyllis, Y&R)
" 'Never Can Say Goodbye.' I have loved it for years!" Walt Willey (Jack, AMC)
"Well, I hate to be old school here, but I'm awfully fond of 'ABC'. It's easy as 1-2-3 and simple as Do-Re-Mi." Melissa Claire Egan (Annie, AMC)
" 'PYT', Pretty Young Thing. It's just always been my favorite happy, fun MJ song, I blast it while getting ready to go out at night. It never fails." Taylor Spreitler (Mia, DAYS)
'' 'Billie Jean'. You just can't help but dance to that song. And now it's stuck in my head. Ha! Ha!" Bobbie Eakes (Krystal, AMC)
"Michael's early performance of 'Who's Loving You' is astounding for a singer of ANY age. The fact that he was only 11 years old is mind-boggling." Chrishell Stause (Amanda, AMC)
"My favorite MJ song is The Jackson 5's 'I Want You Back.' It's an oldie but a goodie! My favorite memory is getting a MJ purse at a county fair when I was a kid. I took it everywhere and treated it like gold!!" Alison Sweeney (Sami, DAYS)
"My favorite song would have to be 'Man in the Mirror'. My junior high school did a whole assembly about the video when it came out. I always remembered that. Then, I was in spin class the day after his passing and our instructor had that on the playlist at the end. It sent chills up my spine." Julie Pinson (Janet, ATWT)
"My favorite song is 'She's Out Of My Life,' the one he supposedly wrote for Tatum O'Neal. I had a crush on him and wanted him to be singing that song about me, not her!!" Trevor St. John (Todd, OLTL)
"Off the Wall came out when I had started to be affected by music. I still listen to that with pride. Except, I'll tell you something embarrassing. When I was 8 or 9, I used to look [at his reflection] in the window and I'd take a hairbrush and sing that ballad, 'She's out of My Life' from Off the Wall. I was really getting into it." Farah Fath (Gigi, OLTL)
"My favorite Michael tune is 'Smooth Criminal'. For the rest of my life I will blast it and wonder if Annie is okay or not." RELATED RESOURCES |
