He attended the University of Cincinnati on a football scholarship and graduated as a music major with a specialization in voice as part of a unique program that included study at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. Canary began his career on the Broadway stage in Jose Quintero's production of Great Day in the Morning, with Colleen Dewhurst. Just as his career was taking off, Canary was drafted into the Army. He won the All Army Entertainment Contest for best popular singer. When David left the service, he restarted his career on the West Coast, starring in The Fantasticks in San Francisco. Television and movie roles soon followed. Before AMC, Canary was best known as Candy on BONANZA. He also played Steve Frame on ANOTHER WORLD. Although his home is now on television, Canary frequently returns to his theater roots and appears on stage in various productions across the country.
