The 411

One of daytime's most beloved stars, DAYS OF OUR LIVES' Deidre Hall (Marlena Evans Black) has the distinction of playing the first daytime character who's been possessed by the devil, which caused the normally well-mannered psychiatrist to light both the community Christmas tree and church on fire. Hall came to Salem in 1976, after gigs on EMERGENCY as Nurse Sally Lewis and on daytime as THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS' Barbara Anderson. Hall played Marlena until 1987 and then made a dramatic return to the show (and from the dead) in 1991. While on DAYS, she also played Jesse Witherspoon on the family drama OUR HOUSE for two seasons, beginning in 1986. (Hall exited DAYS when it became impossible to co-ordinate her prime time and daytime schedules.)

Hall's daytime and prime-time roles run a far second to her role as mother to the two sons she had with Steve Sohmer (most recently ABC's executive vice president of marketing, advertising and promotion). The circumstances surrounding their birth — they were both carried by the same surrogate — were chronicled in a 1995 made-for-tv movie (which she also executive produced), NEVER SAY NEVER: THE DEIDRE HALL STORY.

Memorable Quotes

"Early on, when I read the scripts — there were eight in a row — I was on the treadmill and wept the entire hour."—on the scenes surrounding John's death, Soap Opera Weekly, 11/6/2007

"I like that she's courageous; I like that she's outspoken. I would like to see her maintain this level of intensity. My fantasy would be a woman who's having a Jodie Foster moment. She loses someone she loves — and comes out fighting!"— Weekly, 11/6/2007
