Julia Barr joined ALL MY CHILDREN in 1976 as the rebellious teen-ager Brooke English. (She briefly played Reenie Szabo on RYAN'S HOPE prior to AMC.) A Hoosier by birth, Barr lives in New Jersey with her husband, Dr. Richard Hirschlag, an oral surgeon, and daughter Allison, who played Lizzie on GUIDING LIGHT from 2002-2003. While she has appeared on AMC for most of her acting career, Julia took a 15-month break from 1981-'82 to tour in The West Side Waltz, with Katharine Hepburn. Upon returning to Pine Valley, she remained until the show wished to take her off contract and offered her a recurring role. Barr declined the offer and opted to leave in December 2006.
Barr also devotes her time and energy to a number of worthwhile causes including First Step, a job-readiness program in tandem with the Coalition for the Homeless in New York City. She helps with The Fund for Animals, a foundation for the protection and care of wild and domestic animals. Proceeds from a Barr-Hirschlag family CD, From Our Home...to Yours, went to the fund.
