THE 411
Rachel Melvin was born in Elmhurst, Illinois, but raised in Phoenix, Arizona. During high school, she choreographed Mountain Pointe Dance Company concerts and was part of the Southwest Valley Youth Orchestra where she played and studied violin. In 2003, after graduating high school, she picked up and moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting — but not before almost accepting a full scholarship to Arizona State University. With her parents' support, she made the decision to postpone college.
As it turned out, moving to L.A. was the right decision. Aside from landing the role of Chelsea on DAYS, she appeared on primetime shows JACK & BOBBY, SUMMERLAND, and 8 SIMPLE RULES. Her talents aren’t just onscreen, either — Melvin worked in theater as well, receiving remarkable ratings at the Clear Lake Drama Festivals in Group Acting, Improvisation, Mime, Storytelling and Lip Sync.
Taking on the role of Chelsea was a challenge, says Melvin. “I’m always the girl next door. How am I going to be edgier?” she wondered. Clearly she found a way, though she claims, “She’s [Chelsea] still a huge challenge.”
In her free time, Melvin plays a red electric violin, and has been developing a children’s book. She is also into art. “I love scrapbooking. I love decorating. I love art," rattles off the actress. "I'm a very crafty person."

MELVIN SPEAKS HER MIND...
“I love her. Seriously, I used to stay home from school, so I could watch her show. I watched it religiously for a while. I was like I’ve got to learn how to do that.”—Melvin on MARTHA STEWART LIVING, soapoperadigest.com.
“We’re both kinda goofy and cheery all the time. We have like the most energy on set. When everyone else is like, ‘Oh, it’s a Monday,’ we’re happy to hang out ‘cause we’re the only people who can stand each other now! We’re both loud.”—On herself and Ashley Benson (Abby, DAYS), Soap Opera Digest, 8/23/05
“He tries to be funny, and he’s not. I try to sound smart, and I’m not. And we pretty much make sure that both of us are aware of that. You’re not funny, and I’m not smart.”— On her playful off-screen friendship with Darin Brooks (Max, DAYS), Digest, 10/3/06
“We weren’t completely dedicated to golf like everybody else, so we just kinda goofed around, got a tan, hit some balls and chased them because they were never hit well, and rode in the golf carts and had a grand old time.”—On being on her high school’s golf team, Digest, 9/19/06
“I love Julie [Pinson, Billie] and I hate that I can’t be nice to her. After a scene, I’m always like ‘Julie, I’m so sorry,’ and she’ll say, ‘Would you stop apologizing?’”— On having to be mean to her on-screen mom Julie Pinson, Digest, 2/14/06
YOU SHOULD HEAR WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT YOU!
“She listens to everything I say and thinks I have really good taste! And more seriously, Rachel has really stepped up as an actress with the difficult scenes she has had to play over the past few months.”—Julie Pinson (Billie, DAYS), Digest 2/4/06
“ I definitely go to her [if I have a bad day on set] because we’ve been working together so long; we know each other best. If I’m having a bad day, I usually go to her.”—Darin Brooks (Max, DAYS), Digest, 10/3/06
